A British general to an American hero, George Washington helped our founding fathers to build a free country. Washington commenced traditions and developed our country to a free democracy . George Washington grew up with his father, brother, and mother who he talked highly about in journal entries. Washington was trained and schooled by his father and brother and was destined to become a general. He originally went to America with British soldiers to be a commander and after became top commander for the rebels. Washington later became the first president, setting standards for presidents today. Washington gave up his power to live his life in Mount Vernon. He originally fought for Britain, but decided to fight for a free country with the Americans. In the document, “First annual address to congress January 8th, 1790,” Washington talks about how keeping peace in the colones is the best way to fight the war and keep the country together. Washington said, “To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace” (First annual address to Congress, January 8, 1790). George Washington was taking control of the war, trying to do anything to prevent havoc and keep the country together during the war. Without being prepared, the country could have been destroyed and crumbled, so being prepared created a sense of peace. If Washington didn’t fight with the Americans for freedom, we could still be apart of the British Empire and America would be different countries or territories, like the French and Mexican territories. Another possibility could have been that someone else other than Washington could have raised up and lived his legacy. George Washington spent his time after the war building a government and creating new systems to construct a stronger government. In “George Washington: On the Lack of National Spirit Letter (1778),” he explains how he sacrificed his life to build a country the next generations could grow up in. Washington states, “By a man who is daily injuring his private estate without even the smallest earthly advantage not common to all in case of a favorable issue to the dispute; by one who wishes the prosperity of America most devoutly and sees or thinks he sees it on the brink of ruin” ("George Washington: On the Lack of a National Spirit Letter (1778)"). Washington thrown any advantages he could have gotten to make sure the country was a safe and free place to come to. Washington had given up his life for the benefit of others who needed a place to live safe in harmony. Without Washington's work on our country we wouldn't have freedom or a country that feels safe to live in. We would be living under the same conditions as Britain and wouldn't have anywhere else to go after coming to America as a colony.
