I am applying to your PhD in Kinesiology program with a focus on building upon relevant previous experience and education and preparing me towards my career. As a result of my enduring interest in sports, I studied Anthropology of Sports at the University. During my internship at the University of Calgary through the Student for Development Program (SFD), I had the opportunity to learn about the possibility and opportunity of studying sports at the University. Unfortunately, in my native country, there is generally a scarcity of experts in this area and specifically a negligible number of women in this field, and explains why I hope to gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of how sports can be applied to improve the general wellbeing (physical and mental) of participants and benefit to society. Given this opportunity, I hope to become a positive influence on women to pursue their dream in this area of study and also to fill in the gap in this field. …show more content…
For cancer survivors, I will concentrate on how social relationships developed through physical activities can have a positive psychological influence for cancer survivors and enabling healthy lifestyles through exercise and ways this can influence quality of life. My goal will be to study/examine aspects of social support in exercise/physical activity and its impact on physical behaviour and quality of life. For older adults, I will assess social support processes and collaborative interventions to promote and maintain their relationship networks through exercise and also for their psychological wellbeing. Accomplishing this goal requires research abilities, I accordingly find your PhD program an ideal setting for my further
Kinesiology is the study of body movement and physical therapy lies in a career that relates to aiding many people with injuries, diseases, or deformity. Rather than using drugs or surgery, physical methods such as massages, heat treatments, or exercise can rehabilitate the people to become the best they could ever be. Having the ability to help people physically and mentally has influenced my choice to enter the field of sport medicine. The soul purpose of a physical therapist is to help people gain their ability to move, decrease the amount of pain, and to be able to have complete function of their body.
Introduction Figueroa’s framework was developed by Professor Peter Figueroa it is a tool used to investigate “issues and ideas surrounding equity, access and equality in exercise, sport and physical activity.” (Amezdroz, 2010). Equity in sport is where no matter what race or gender you are you are equal. Access is whether it is easy or hard to attend training, fields or games. There are five levels in the framework; individual, interpersonal, institutional, structural and cultural.
This framework includes 5 levels. The individual, interpersonal, institutional, structural and cultural, these areas are used to investigate the ways in which inequities challenge the area of sport and physical activity. I know from personal experience some of my sport choices has been affected from these levels, either because of cost or because the only facilities for these sports were not near the area that we lived in. When it comes to athletics, I haven’t personally been always engaged in this for various reasons, pressure from others watching you as it is an induvial sport. As I have been more interested in other team sports such as basketball getting better in these sports had become a priority.
When a college student says that they are a kinesiology major the first thought that may come to mind when thinking of what that person wants to be is a coach or an athletic trainer. Moreover, there are several different careers whom might pursue from a kinesiology degree. Kinesiology is defined as the study of the mechanics of body movements, so the careers capable of being pursued range from coaches or athletic trainers to physical therapists. One discipline in kinesiology that be will be discussed is the job of a prosthetic practitioner. Which will be the purpose of this writing, to inform you about this kinesiology career and the concepts of it.
While attending the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, I plan to study kinesiology and exercise science. As a former athlete, and someone who has seen what other athletes have endured, my biggest goal for myself and my career is now to make a difference in the lives of athletes and subsequently, those they inspire. I plan to work as a strength and conditioning coach or an athletic trainer for a college or professional sports team. My mindset, work ethic, and the excellent resources available to me through this university will help me achieve this. Additionally, the University of Hawai’i offers a unique opportunity for me to see the world outside of my hometown.
Studies have shown that peer support leads to improvement in self-management behaviors of dietary modifications, blood glucose monitoring, and increased physical activity (Murrock, Higgins, & Killion , 2009). Social support provided by peer, family and community members have been effective way to motivated individuals in continuing their attendance in health programs. Health behavior change theories and chronic disease management models highlighted that family support influence individuals affected with chronic illnesses into engaging in self-care behavior (Warren-Findlow & Prohaska, 2008). They are more encouraged by family members to engage in physical activity or weight loss programs. Peer support is also effective among individuals coping
The special characteristics about college is that they give you options and choices to your own major and career interest. The major question asked about my field of study is “are there different career path in a kinesiology major?” to answer this question, let first look at what being a Kinesiology major even means. About me: My name is Summer Hill, I am a Certified Athletic Therapist CAT(C) and hold a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education (BHPE) degree. This gender and diversity interview was conducted with Victoria Mealer-Flowers, the Student-Athlete Development Sr. Manager for Community Engagement and DEI Programs at Brown University Athletics. A range of topics were discussed pertaining to gender and diversity in sport, including racism, LGBTQ+ athletes, ableism, religion and privilege. Mealer-Flowers’s overarching stance on the state of diversity, equity and inclusion in sport is that the pertinent issues have evolved, rather than changed. Rather than having administrators trying to introduce and impose DEI topics and conversations with student-athletes and teams, it is the student-athletes who are taking charge and pursuing social activism of their own volition. Interview a Professional in Kinesiology As we embark on a profession in Kinesiology we have to ask what field best fits me and my personality. Originally I wanted to pursue a Physical therapy career. As I studied further and understood the education aspect Physical therapy I realized I wanted to be part of the boot camp perspective of wellness and fitness. I wanted to join in on the fun while educating my client as well.
Imagine finally having the sport you are most passionate about available for you to participate in, yet not being able to compete in it simply because you are not of the correct gender. Nowadays, this is a fairly common issue. Whether it is because of both gender differences or due to the common belief that “boys are stronger than girls”, coeducation exercise is not exceedingly popular. Although many people believe males are stronger than females and think that coed sports are unfair, this type of athletics can benefit all athletes in multiple ways because it will allow both genders to work together more efficiently, allow the participants and sponsors to pay less, and help create connections with others that would not originally be made.
Throughout the semester, I have gained a better understanding of adapted physical education and sport programs. These programs provide children and adults with an opportunity to participate in sports they may not have thought were possible. The modifications to sport and exercise allows individuals with a range of disabilities to engage in activity. The disabilities can range from a mild learning disability to a permanent condition caused from a serious accident. While observing numerous individuals with disabilities, I was able to obtain a better understanding of the challenges that came with physical activity.
Part I: In 250 words or less, express your motivations for choosing Kinesiology as a major and how it relates to your future goals. I have wanted to pursue a career in the medical field since I was a child. In high school, this passion was put to the test after I suffered a bilateral hip injury that made mundane tasks like going up stairs, getting dressed, or even standing a painful and taxing ordeal. I was advised to quit all physical activity by my team of doctors, but as a three sport athlete for me that was not an option.
(Managan, 2017) Although sport engagement and aid of women athletes has grown increasingly, future improvements are not a given fact. It is a well known certainty that even in the current 21st century, the reality is that women in general still experience difficulty and discrimination from the conventional gender norms that hinder with their engagement in sports. In order to make sure that gender equity in sports is maintained, the gender ideals that are correlated to sport must be examined thoroughly and effectively before any succeeding action takes
