Discussion Childhood obesity has become a growing epidemic shown to have numerous negative consequences on children’s quality of health. This multisystem disorder has increased medical comorbidities associated with excess weight, such as type-2-diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and negative psychosocial ramifications impacting children’s well-being and compromising school attendance. The literature has demonstrated childhood obesity does have a significant impact on school absenteeism; thus, this research can help argue why LAPUSD revenue may have increased. In this research, students’ FITNESSGRAM® scores on weight status and aerobic capacity was an important independent variable to measure and define childhood obesity in the LAPUSD. The research findings indicated that weight status alone had no significance on days absent during the two school years of 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. However, during the school year of 2011-2012, both interactions between students’ weight status and aerobic capacity scores and between aerobic capacity and gender had a significant impact on days absent from school. …show more content…
Extraneous variables such as, children’s motivation levels and environmental conditions may have influenced the physical fitness test. Furthermore, the type of available physical education program may have impacted students’ scores. This research did not investigate the physical education (P.E.) program at the LAPUSD, nor did it investigate how often students for each school year received P.E., or if they received at least 50 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity
A man in Hollywood was arrested earlier this week for derailing an LAPD helicopter that was searching for a fleeing suspect with his drone. Is it because of the changes from generation to generation? Is it because some exercises do not have the expected outcome? Is it to prevent injuries? Many empirical studies, which assist with the design of fitness and wellness programs currently, exist. The survey of fitness continues to answer questions and improve how we prepare our soldiers for the physical rigors of combat.
Firstly, between each baseline and post test for both my freshman and sophomore years, my test performance in each category improved or stayed in a steady state, as I was actively participating within my physical education class, partaking in exercises and workouts that helped to increase my muscular strength, stamina, and tone my entire body to become more physically fit as a whole. In addition, I made sure to exercise outside of school, by practicing core activities within my home, such as planking or doing crunches, and playing tennis or biking with my family and friends. Likewise, during the time between my ninth grade post test and tenth grade baseline, my scores decreased, as the rate at which I exercised slowed down during the Summer, when I did not have a physical education class to take. Although the frequency of how I stayed active helped to determine my performance on my four fitness tests, my personal attitude contributed a great deal to the change in my scores as well. During each of the two post tests, my scores largely improved or stayed the same in comparison to the baseline tests, as I now knew my physical limits, and I was motivated to do better and obtain a higher grades in each testing category.

The continuing expansion of the nation’s waistline has pushed obesity to the top of the list of major health problems in the United States. In recent decades, the prevalence of obesity has increased dramatically in the United States, tripling among children and doubling among adults. Studies shows that Almost 13 million (16.9%) of U.S. children ages 2 to 19 are obese. And more than one-third (about 35%) of U.S. adults are obese (more than 78 million adults).

Personal Philosophy of Health and Physical Education Quality physical education begins with the instructor. Research shows that quality physical education plays a vital role in public health. According to Masurier & Corbin (2006), “Physical education specialists delivering meaningful content and appropriate instruction must become the norm in the educational system in order to provide children with positive physical activity experiences that will lead them to maintain physical activity throughout their lifetime. Throughout the early twentieth century and into the 1950s, there was a growth of physical education in the public schools. During the early 1920s many states passed legislation requiring physical education in schools. However there were shifts in curricular emphasis were evident when wars occurred and when the results of national reports were published. “For example, as a result of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the United States' entrance into World War II, the emphasis in physical education shifted from games and sport to physical conditioning.” (Boyce, 1) Similar curricular shifts were noted in 1953 when the Kraus-Weber study found that American children were far less fit than their European counterparts.
The benefits are tremendous and can lower risk of diabetes, lower blood pressure, and lower chance of obesity. In schools across the United States, physical education has been substantially reduced and in some cases completely eliminated in response to budget concerns and pressures to improve academic test scores. Yet the available evidence shows that children who are physically active and fit tend to perform better in the classroom, and that daily physical education does not adversely affect academic performance. Schools can provide outstanding learning environments while improving children’s health through physical education. Today, obesity is one of the most pressing health concerns for our children.
