The life of a union soldier in the civil war is not easy, not only do they face the possibility of getting killed in battle, but their daily lives are full of hardships. They have to deal with hunger, bad weather, poor clothing, and even bordrem between battles. First, their woken at dawn to begin their day. They have drills in the morning and afternoon where they practiced for battle. Each of them have to know their place in the unit so the army would fight as a group. Fighting together and quickly obeying the commands of the officers was a key to victory. Between the drills, they would do chores such as cooking their meals, fixing their uniforms, or cleaning equipment. If they had some free time they might play games such as poker or dominoes. Then at night some of them have guard duty. This could make for a long and tiring day. …show more content…
As well as more serving in the Navy and in support positions. This number comprised of both northern free African Americans and runaway slaves from the South who enlisted to fight. In the Confederacy, African Americans were still slaves and they served mostly in labor positions. By 1865, the South allowed slaves to enlist but very few actually did. We do not receive equal pay or equal treatment. We are getting paid $10 a month, with $3 deducted from that pay for clothing—white soldiers received $13 a month with no clothing deduction—until June 1864, when Congress granted retroactive equal pay. As you think of union, you think of “together” or “as one” right, but I’m drained. I don’t want to go into the civil war but today is the day we start April 12th . I’m pretty sure we are going to win because we have better uniforms and weapons but i was completely wrong about that.We have fought 2 battles “The Battle Of Fort Sumter” and “The First Bull Run” and have loss. Not only have we lost in victory, we have lost more than 30,000 of our
The Civil War. Louis P. Masur’s book, The civil War: a Concise History, Is a book that gives an overview of the civil war from 18 to 1800, Providing multiple causes an consequences that emerged from the war. The book begins by reviewing the origins of the war. Chapter one covers the issues between northern and southern states and the tension over right and slave possession. The tension created a conflict that raised a number of political, social, and military events that then proceeded into a battle to abolish slavery from the colonies.
Through this movie we can see how at the start officers of the union army would not supply the Massachusetts 54th with supplies they needed, we can see how Shawn had to fight to get shoes and union uniforms to the men. We can see how Shawn had to fight also to get the officers to start considering the infantry for the actual fighting because at the start they were created they were only seen as useful for manual work and later for the raiding of confederate houses, but not for anything else. Glory shows how the members of the infantry also had to fight while receiving sometimes the rough or unfair treatment of their trainers, the lack of supplies and of fair payment and the threats from the confederate government that if they found any black person fighting with the union, they would be executed. But the movie also shows how they did not think at any moment of the option of leaving leave the infantry and instead when they finally were given the opportunity to fight many of them were motivated and excited to finally be given the opportunity to fight and defend the
The United States Civil War is possible one of the most meaningful, bloodstained and controversial war fought in American history. Northern Americans against Southern Americans fought against one another for a variety of motives. These motives aroused from a wide range of ideologies that stirred around the states. In James M. McPherson’s What they fought for: 1861-1865, he analyzes the Union and Confederate soldier’s morale and ideological components through the letters they wrote to love ones while at war. While, John WhiteClay Chambers and G. Kurt Piehler depict Civil War soldiers through their letters detailing the agonizing battles of war in Major Problems in American Military History.
As you know being in an army could be quite difficult for soldiers. Both Union soldiers and Confederate soldiers train everyday and do certain duties to get ready for the American Civil War. However, there are huge differences between the two armies. Before the war started, most of the soldiers from both North and South had been farmers. If the Southerners did not farm they either became carpenters, mechanics, merchants, machinist, lawyers, teachers, blacksmiths, or a dentist.
It is unfortunate that this had to happen but this benefited many more people than it harmed. In the next document a woman from Georgia gives a description of what the Union army did. The Union troops burnt every structure and took all of the grain and animals. They made it so it was almost impossible for the Southerners to survive without becoming scavengers. The woman feels strong hate towards the Union troops claiming that she would kill a Union troop.
Life for the Union Soldier was not only brutal on the battlefield, but the camp life for a Union soldier was just as cruel. With the lack of personal hygiene, unsavory and repugnant food, and the shortage of clothing made living, a very difficult thing to do. Growth in the number of people with diseases was also a contributing factor to the massive amounts of death within the camp and as well as the post-battle wounds that often left either a man with one less limb or put in a mental institution. A Union Soldier’s life during the Civil War was cruel and horrific during their stay at the camps.
When individuals ponder everything that went into the making of our nation, there is a plethora of different events to consider. Regardless of how many events, good or bad, have occurred in American history, all human beings alike tend to look at our history with tunnel vision—only focusing on the good. Our citizens, past and present, everyday people to politicians, either fail to acknowledge the existence of our historic downfalls or they manipulate these downfalls into something justifiable. Even more so now than ever, when bad things occur in America, they get purposely swept under the rug and forcefully shoved into the depths of the closet. The reconstruction that occurred post-Civil War is no exception to this aforementioned flaw.
It is December of 1861 and the War Between the States has been happening for roughly seven months now. The number one bloodiest war in the United States history. Everyone hopes their loved ones are alive along with writing letters to them everyday, hoping that they would send letters back, reassuring their loved ones back home that they did not die in battle. We all wonder what it is like to be a soldier, fighting for our country, nevertheless for our freedom on a daily basis. The answers to all of your questions about your loved ones present in this essay.
The Civil War marked a defining moment in United States history. Long simmering sectional tensions reached a critical stage in 1860-1861 when eleven slaveholding states seceded and formed the Confederate States of America. Political disagreement gave way to war in April 1861, as Confederates insisted on their right to leave the Union and the loyal states refused to allow them to go. Four years of fighting claimed almost 1.5 million casualties directly affected untold civilians, and freed four million enslaved African Americans. The social and economic system based on chattel slavery that the seceding states had sought to protect lay in ruins.
Entry 1: I was returning home to Washington when I heard the dreadful news. The Army of Northern Virginia surrendered to Union General Grant after a crushing defeat. I talked with two of my loyal companions David Herold and Lewis Powell telling them that Abraham Lincoln will not be the president anymore after I am through with him. Entry 2: After receiving the news that Abraham Lincoln and friends would be attending Ford’s Theatre it was perfect.
The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).
In the general orders document the African Americans had no say in the recruitment process. I think the flyers appealed to the colored people simply because they talked about freedom and most colored people couldn't read or write so they probably couldn't comprehend the entire flyer and possibly based what they did off of what others told them. To an extent they weren't free still. In the document, it says “Three or more field officers will be detailed as Inspectors to supervise the organization of colored troops at such points as may be indicated by the War Department in the Northern and Western States.”
Post Civil War, African Americans started to gain rights to gain rights, and soon gain rights equal to whites. While there were some people/things standing in their way (KKK, Black Codes), in the end they got what they needed; Equality. Many acts and laws were passed to aid the new rights now held by African Americans, as well as the numerous people willing to help. New Amendments were added to give African Americans rights after the war, all giving them some equal rights to whites. The first of the three added was the Thirteenth Amendment, it gave African Americans freedom from slave owners, and stated that no one could be kept as a slave in the U.S..
In chapter one of What They Fought For, I learned about the letters and diaries of the Confederate soldiers. The themes of the letters were home-sickness, lack of peace, and the defense of home against their invading enemy. The thought of soldiers fighting for their homes and being threatened by invaders, made them stronger when facing adversity. Many men expressed that they would rather die fighting for a cause, than dying without trying and this commitment showed patriotism. Throughout the letters, soldiers claimed their reason for fighting, was for the principles of Constitutional liberty and self-government.
Civil War The year was 1861 and the first battle had already begun. The country was now divided as two teams, the confederates and the unions. I wasn’t looking forward to the upcoming battle that was about to happen. I sat in my tent in silence, thinking about what might happen.
