Discussion Post NURS 6531 Week One Nurse Practitioner Competencies Quality As we further our education to become advanced practice nurses (APNs), it is crucial that we understand the behaviors or core competencies expected of all APNs. For the purpose of this discussion, I will evaluate the core competency of quality and how I will integrate this behavior into my daily practice. The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (2014), outlines the quality competency as continued improvement of practice through the use of the best evidence, evaluation of the influence of safety, access, cost, and quality of health care. Also, the application of skills to encourage a culture of excellence, and the ability to implement interventions …show more content…
It is the job of the APN to apply their skills to promote a culture of excellence. Promoting such a culture involves using all aspects of the quality competency. The Nurse Practitioner is in a unique position as a clinician and manager. According to Carney (2011), clinical managers have the capability to ensure the safe, ethical, and high quality of care due to their professional background, which is firmly grounded in ethical healthcare. Therefore, the APN has a distinct set of skills that will ensure positive patient outcomes. Another contributor to quality care is the use of evidence-based practice (EBP). EBP is an approach to solving issues that integrate the best evidence from well-designed studies from a clinician?s expertise. These studies extrapolate the evidence from patient assessments, preferences, values, and practice data. The findings from these studies yield research that leads to higher quality of care, positive patient outcomes, increased quality of care, and decreased costs (Mazurek, Fineout-Overholt, Gallagher-Ford, & Kaplan, 2012). Conclusion In conclusion, APNs are equipped to deliver the same safe, efficient, and high- quality care as physicians. The clinical and professional background of nurses gives them an extraordinary opportunity to change the healthcare landscape and promote cost-effective, compassionate, and patient-centered care for people. In a study performed by Dill, Pankow, Erikson, & Shipman (2013), the patient preferred the APN to physicians due to greater accessibility, more personalized and compassionate care, increased comfort with communication, and past positive
One similarity between NPs, other APNs and PAs is that, they all play a very important role in health care and patient centered approach of care is their objective. Also, their practice is based upon their education, training and certification in collaboration and under supervision of physicians. Another similarity is that, their scope of practice face limitations and restrictions in practicing be it state base or nationally. State laws and regulations act as barriers towards the broadening of PAs professional competencies same as NPs face licensure and practice laws that prevent full extent of their education practice. NP practice requires supervision, delegation, or team-management by an outside health discipline in order to provide
Outcomes demonstrated that patient access to care improved and there was high quality of care provided. Edmunds, M. (1978). Evaluation of nurse practitioner effectiveness: An overview of the literature. Evaluation and the Health Professions. 1, 69-82 (E, A, I P/A) This article provides an overview of published literature that focuses on the effectiveness of the NP.
My knowledge in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) continues to expand as I progress through the DNP program. The knowledge I have attained while in the study of the DNP I and DNP II is priceless. For example, recognizing stakeholders and utilizing networking has helped me to progress on my DNP project (Gokenbach, 2012). I also have a better understanding as well as the purpose of a DNP project. My mentors have been great in directing me in remaining on the right track.
NU 413 Week 9 Discussion Board Post student response to Katie-Lynn Fournier by Kathryn Moultrie Good afternoon Kathie, Enjoyed reading your post, and seeing how other organizations handle the operations of their facility and nursing departments. My biggest concern with improving quality care and patient safety issues in that, the responsibility is not ours alone, our Chief Nurse Executives (CNEs) and Director of Nursing (DON), and senior nursing management staffs to lead the journey Disch J. (2008). I find it overwhelming that the majority of the research literature (studies, surveys and reports believe nursing plays the pivotal role in changing the face of health care and improving quality care and patient safety.
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing has identified nine essentials that are incorporated into master’s nursing programs in order to help guide the practice of advance practice nurse (APN). Essential II outlines how an APN can utilize organizational and systems leadership to promote safer and more cost effective care to patients. By incorporating effective leadership skills, APN’s can impact healthcare reform and quality improvements for the patient, institution and the community. According to the American Association of College of Nursing (2011), a effective leader assumes and applies the skills of communication, collaboration, negotiation, delegation, and coordination. APN’s must establish and maintain healthy working relationships
The Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies include ten areas of expertise: Patient - centered care, professionalism, informatics and technology, evidence - based practice, leadership, systems - based practice, safety, communication, teamwork and collaboration , and quality improvment. After a lot of research, these competencies were selected based on how we can transition from our current practice and education standards to our future practices. The ten competencies that were selected are based on the foundation of nursing education and how it will translate into the practical world. It is very important to understand each aspect of this model because it is the core of how we develop our nursing knowledge while transitioning from student
Despite accepting advanced roles and responsibilities APRNs have often encountered various barriers in the delivery of effective health care based on the variability in the legislative requirements endorsed by various states. To overcome these barriers and improve the delivery of healthcare the Consensus Model for APRNs has been endorsed by 41 various nursing organizations focusing on defining the roles, population foci and implementation strategies across the nation (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2017). Creating a standard expectation regarding the practice of APRNs will help to foster more consistent, quality education APRN programs nationwide (Rounds, Zych, & Mallary,
Definition and Scope of Practice of a Nurse Practitioner Introduction An advanced practice nurse is a registered nurse who has developed and accomplished extensive practical experience and theoretical knowledge in critical decision making, and practice in their different areas of practice (Joel, 2013). Advanced practice nursing is a level of practice for such nurses who have acquired a certain level of educational and practical knowledge. The APNs play a major role in the healthcare industry, providing services such as patient assessment, patient history taking, physical and clinical examinations, ordering lab tests for patients, referring patients for specialized care if need be, performing diagnosis, and prescribing medications (Zaccagnini & White, 2013). They work at the primary care level, where they act as the first line of respondents for the patients.
By setting academic and professional standards, AACN shows the importance of nursing and its ability to provide quality outcomes in patient care throughout the health care
This information is used to appropriately implement prevention and treatment for patients. The second outcome integrates analysis of information gathered by healthcare personnel to identify trends and inconsistencies within the healthcare population. Through this the origin of problems can be ascertained, and preventive measures can be instituted. Subsequently prevention will decrease incidences and ultimately the cost to
The NLN contributes to nursing excellence by supporting education to build a strong, educated, workforce. Health care professionals possessing knowledge, skills, and professional attributes, is imperative for health care systems to meet the core standards of quality care (Baid, & Hargreaves, 2015). I agree with the statement above that all nurses must strive for excellence
In the leadership in care delivery course, we were assigned to a hospital to perform clinical hours and provide care to four patients. Additionally, the purpose of this paper is to explain and provide examples on how our patient care included the concepts of Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) competencies, delegation, handoff reporting, and a reflection of the clinical experience. Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) Competencies QSEN consists of six competencies: patient centered care, quality improvement, teamwork and collaboration, safety, informatics, and evidence based practice. To provide patient-centered care, I had to educate the patient when administering medications on why the patient was taking the medication and side effects. Care had to be individualized with each patient and it included providing respect with his or her decisions in their care.
Lewis, Stephens, and Ciak (2016) confirmed that the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) initiative was developed to determine competencies for nursing students based upon Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations with the main goal of QSEN is to establish a cultural change toward quality and safety. According to QSEN (2014), addresses the challenge of preparing future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) are essential components of improving the quality and safety of the healthcare systems. Furthermore, the QSEN six competencies for nursing that targets the KSA to guarantee future graduates to develop competencies in patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement,
In the clinical setting, the nurses’ expertise can be used to make clinical assessments and recommendations for routine care at a lower cost than a physician visit. This would increase the number of patients seen and increase the quality of the care provided. The advance practice nurse would be able to hone in on preventative measures and increase patient education. The advance practice nurse can also make recommendations about practice changes needed to facilitate better health outcomes through the use of evidence-based practice. Nursing leaders are aware of how important nursing science is to provide needed evidence to transform practice, even though, finding the time and resources to support any research activity is often challenging (Stone, 2017).
Providing care to a patient is a particularly challenging process that requires a great deal of effort from a nurse. A nurse’s ability to give quality care to their patient is an important aspect to a patient’s life both now and in the future. As such, nurses must exhibit specific qualities in their practice in order to maintain the best standard of care for their patients. Given this, I believe that the standards of knowledge, advocacy, and self-awareness are foundational to the nursing practice and to a nurse’s capacity to provide quality patient care. Knowledge
