Obesity is a medical condition that affects much of the global population. This medical condition can bring about other medical problems and issues if not treated properly. Obesity is a complex condition with many risk factors that can cause a person to develop the condition. These risk factors are environment, genetics, sleep, etc. Obesity can bring about serious health issues such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and mental health problems. When efforts in the prevention and management of obesity are made the adoption of healthier eating, getting adequate levels of physical activity, managing stress, and creating a supportive environment are key. With this Americans are opting for convenient means of nutrition to fit into their already hectic schedules. Examples of convenient nutrition would be fast food, or an item picked up from a gas station in the morning. In addition, children are being advertised sugary foods and beverages that do not have much nutritional value. The two mentioned examples play a small part in the growing concern about obesity in the United States of America. Most people understand the condition has to having an unhealthy body weight and lack an adequate amount of daily physical activity. Currently, there has been a trend in the number of individuals who are affected by obesity. Data shows that in the United States alone that about 13.7 million children are considered obese (American Obesity Foundation, n.d.). On a global scale, data has shown that about 500 million adults are defined as obese (Obesity Prevention Source, 2016). This data is alarming because of the great number of individuals who are affected by this condition. Someone is considered obese if their body mass index (BMI) is equal to or greater than 30 and those who are overweight have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 (Lin & Li, 2021). With a simple search on the internet, a person can find a BMI chart that they can use to help determine their own BMI. Of course, if an individual is concerned with their body weight, they should make an appointment with their healthcare provider. With a medical opinion, a person can start making the right steps needed to battle this condition and rule out any other health problems that can concise with obesity. Each year, there are about 112,000 deaths from obesity that are preventable. In the past few decades, the number of cases of obesity has been on the rise in the United States. It has tripled among children and doubled among adults. In 1990, Connecticut’s obesity rate was at 10.4 percent. Then, in 2000, it was at 16.0 percent and currently it’s at 26.0 percent.
Asthma, diabetes, heart disease, joint problems, depression, and even death are all effects of a deadly epidemic that is surging through the adolescents of America (Johnson). This epidemic is known as obesity. It has become the second leading cause of death in America, simply because it can lead to so many other health problems (Johnson).
