Scientists have conducted a study and it has proven that unhealthy food is $1.50 cheaper per day, or about $550 per year per person (Polis). The reason unhealthy food is so cheap is because it is made from cheap harmful ingredients. The four most harmful ingredients in processed foods are trans fats, refined grains, salts, and high fructose corn syrup (Readers digest). Trans fats increase levels of cholesterol, clog your arteries, and raise levels of triglycerides. Refined grains increase risks of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Having more salt than needed in the body can have many harmful effects such as high blood pressure. Excess sodium leads to extra fluids, making your heart work harder. High fructose corn syrup causes you to overeat, and is cheaper than other sweeteners and sweeter. Each year, there are about 112,000 deaths from obesity that are preventable. In the past few decades, the number of cases of obesity has been on the rise in the United States. It has tripled among children and doubled among adults. In 1990, Connecticut’s obesity rate was at 10.4 percent. Then, in 2000, it was at 16.0 percent and currently it’s at 26.0 percent.

The high obese population can be explained by culture, portion sizes, food companies and restaurant policies, diets, and traditions. Obesity is not only an individual issue; it is most importantly a national matter. It raises both individual and collective problems related to economic and demographic dynamics. Therefore, based on the alarming rate obesity is growing, it is crucial at this point to find a solution in order to slow down and hopefully stop this epidemic. Comparing diets of different countries and taking a look at the background story of American nutrition and regimes, it is clear that the American diet is very different from other nationalities and has worsened over the decades.
Because in the sixties and seventies we did not have as much additives and high fructose corn syrup. Our bodies are better at handling real sugar and fats than fake syrups and preservatives made in factories. Since the invention of High Fructose Corn Syrup in 1970 Americans have on average consumed 523 more calories per day. This false sugar clogs our arteries and weakens every part of our bodies.
