Healthy People 2020 are objectives established nationally to improve the health of all Americans (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2010). The improvement on Adolescent health is a topic addressed by healthy people 2020 that is supported by the work of school nurses. The goal in addressing adolescent health would be to “improve the health development, health, safety, and well-being of adolescents and young adults (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2010).” School nurses contribute to the overall continuation of approving health in adolescents. During my time at the clinic I have witnessed multiple health objectives supported by the nurse. For example, the school nurse is a confidant to many of the students that she sees regularly. The nurse acts as a counselor, therapist, and mainly parent to the students. They come to her for advice or attention to issues they don’t perceive themselves to be able to handle. During my time there, one student came into the clinic and talked to the nurse about family issues and another came in to take a pregnancy test, because she feared she was pregnant. Nurses are critical for promoting health in the society. The profession is highly flexible, since they specialize in diverse operations in the medical field. Registered nurses, for instance, are responsible for the administration of medicine and inoculations to patients (American Nurses ' Association, 2000). Additionally, these professionals observe, record, and enlighten doctors of any changes in a patient’s health. I begin to think about how my patient is living, what kind of housing are they living in, can they afford their co pay or medication if they do not have insurance’s.
