Odysseus and Thomas Jefferson: Looking into History to Define What a Hero is Heroes used to be considered people who held great power and always came out on top no matter how high the odds were stacked against them. Today we are more critical of the people we look up to, which I believe to be a good thing. We now realize that the people we consider heroes must be good people, who even though they have flaws, try their hardest to do good for the world. Another interesting question is what it means to be a bad person. Is a bad person someone who is inherently bad? Can a bad person do good? Does doing bad things in your life cancel out all the good things you’ve done? To answer these questions, I am going to look into history for a figure we …show more content…
He was a founding father, the first Secretary of State, the second Vice-President of the United States, and the third President. Even though he never actually fought in the Revolutionary War, he was still rather important because of the fact that he was a draftsman of the Declaration of Independence (“Thomas Jefferson; Biography” 2018). In addition to this, Thomas Jefferson was the statesman responsible for the Louisiana Purchase, which was when the U.S bought 530,000,000 acres of land for only $15 million from Napoleon (“Thomas Jefferson; Biography” 2018). However, Jefferson has also done some things that aren’t that noble. When his father died in 1775, he inherited his plantation in Virginia, along with about 175 slaves (“Thomas Jefferson; History” 2018). Throughout his life Thomas Jefferson owned about 600 slaves to work in his home and on his plantation (“Thomas Jefferson; History” 2018). Even though he owned slaves, Jefferson proposed a gradual emancipation of slaves. However, he proposed this idea because he believed that black men were biologically inferior to white men and didn’t believe that blacks and whites could live peacefully together (“President Thomas Jefferson”). He decided that when slaves were freed, they shouldn’t be allowed to live in the U.S, but rather be sent back to Africa (“President Thomas Jefferson”). All this raises an interesting question, what decides if you are a good or bad person? Thomas …show more content…
During the Trojan War, instead of sending his troops to fight for him, Odysseus came with his troops to fight with them. From this we can conclude that Odysseus is most likely a good leader that does care for his people. He also saved his crew-members from the Lotus eaters, a group of people who eat lotus flowers that put you in a trance on an island (Homer 9. 41-48). But all the same, he has done a number of unheroic things as well. For example, while Odysseus was away, his wife Penelope remained completely faithful to him for 20 years and turning away more that 100 suitors. However, Odysseus is not as honorable, cheating on Penelope twice. In addition to this, after Odysseus finally returns, he decided to slaughter all of the suitors that pursued Penelope, all of whom were kings of other kingdoms. Along with killing 108 young men, he killed 12 handmaidens that he felt were disloyal to Penelope as well. At the time, those who heard the Odyssey originally most likely thought that Odysseus was justified in his killing of the suitors and maids because it was seen as him protecting his kingdom and his wife, but reality, all it was was
He was very talented, he played the violin, spoke french and acquired the tastes and refinements of the larger world. Thomas Jefferson has served a enormous symbol of what we as people are. He was a man of the Eighteenth Century a very intelligent yet he was just like all human beings; weak and strong. However, many historians argued that Thomas Jefferson could never really make slavery illegal.
He also wrote an autobiography. Being president is a big job. He was very lucky to get that job. He is a hero for many other things. Thomas Jefferson is a great
Heros’ come in many shapes and forms. Tall, short, small, big, anyone can be a hero, they just have to put in the effort. Though anyone can be a good hero, a great hero is somebody who inspires others, makes a difference, and is selfless. First and foremost, a great hero must be someone who inspires others. Ida B. Wells is an example of a true hero.
Odysseus thinks he is doing the right thing by killing the maid servants but he is discounting the fact that he willingly slept with Circe and stayed in her hospitality for 1 year. ( “No clean death for the likes of them, by god! Not from me- they showered abuse on my head, my mother’s too! You sluts-the suitors’ whores!”-
Odysseus ordered, “ … march the women out of the great hall … and hack them with your swords, slash out all their lives” (22: 466-468). This was a very sexist act for Odysseus to command because on his journey he had slept with multiple women, and then he punished the maids, with their lives, for having done the same with the suitors. Odysseus could have issued a less severe punishment to them, and it was ridiculous to kill them for doing something similar to which Odysseus had done. This order shows how Odysseus was a bad leader because he contradicted utilitarianism by completing unjustifiable actions that lead to bad outcomes for the
Although some may say that Odysseus deserves the loyalty of his crew, he does not because he puts them in the way of danger, is very inconsiderate, and usually follows other plans that people have gave him. While on his journey home,
When Odysseus commands his men to go back to sea to voyage, he is a good leader because he is telling his men what to do. He is being a leader by protecting his men from the Ciccone 's army by leaving before reinforcements come. For example, when Odysseus and his men are heading to the sirens Odysseus states “you are to tie me up, tight as a splint” (Homer 1005). Odysseus is an admirable leader when he orders his men to tie him up and do not untie him because he is sacrificing himself for the good of his men. He is a leader when he does this because he lets his men not suffer the sirens while he has to.
Ultimately Odysseus can be a good leader but behind the scenes, he's not. He may of saved his men multiple times, but also got them killed them due to his neglect. He might be intelligent but really he tolerably manipulated his crew by saying things such as “don’t you want to go back to your home again?”. In closing, throughout the whole story, Odysseus progresses himself and designates many Greek
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
Leaders come in all shapes and sizes, however, what gives someone the title of a good or bad is decided by the decisions they make and how those decisions affect others. Odysseus led the squadron of soldiers in the trojan horse and is a hero of the Trojan War and the king of Ithaca. Consequently, this gives him experience when it comes acting in difficult situations. This experience should guide him to choose correctly when being put in a tight spot.
Based on the actions of Odysseus in book nine of Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus is not an effective leader because he only cares about the well-being of himself and not his men. During his time in the Cyclops cave, he and his men are trying to escape When one of his men comes up with an idea Odysseus takes that idea and makes it his own. To then state how it was him who has saved them all from the Cyclops when they were trapped. To build this point, in the text Odysseus states, “But even from there my courage, my presence of mind tactics saved us all”(9.229-230).
I think Odysseus is not a hero. Most people would say he is but I think this because he is a selfish man and kills people. At first he sounds like an okay person who is a nice man. Wait till you find out what he has done. Odysseus is a very Selfish man.
However Odysseus, despite being a good man, does not display honor and dignity when he refuses to forgive the suitors, then slaughters them all, and has an affair with Calypso. Since Penelope can react to tough situations with grace and poise, she is more admirable than
Odysseus’ condemnation of his maids to death for adultery highlights this hypocrisy, as Odysseus willingly stays on Kirke’s island for an entire year committing adultery. Kirke tells Odysseus that “[they] shall mingle and make love upon [their] bed” (175), and Odysseus agrees. Upon returning to Ithaka, however, Odysseus not only neglects to share this with Penelope, but he sentences her maids to death for being disloyal to Penelope by sleeping with her suitors. Even Telemakhos takes part in their murder, telling the maids that he “[will] not give the clean death of a beast to trulls who [make] a mockery of [his] mother and of [him] too—[those] sluts, who lay with suitors” (424). Telemakhos’ words emphasize the vast gap between how men and women are treated—neither Odysseus’ crew nor Odysseus himself see anything unethical with his adultery, but women cannot possibly lose their chastity.
“If you can tell me who your heroes are, I can tell you how you are going to turn out. It is really important to have the right heroes.” – Warren Buffet. Many people are looking for heroes in wrong places, and misunderstanding the term hero itself. Strength, bravery, courage, and honesty are the things most people think when the name hero pops.
