Growing up in Jacksonville Fl. I lived in some of the rough parts of the city. Most of my friends fell into the life of gangs and prison. At least 5 of my close or people I knew died before the age of 16. Because I saw this as a young age, I wanted more for myself, and more for people. There were families in my neighborhood who were living off welfare, and when the food stamps and government assistance were reaching to an end, some women would have another baby just to survive and live off welfare. I learned to be resilient at a young age and to always stand up for what I believe. My mother …show more content…
My academic and professional career e has taught me how to balance life, a career, and schoolwork. Even though my classes were undergraduate classes, my professors taught their classes at a master’s level. They expected everyone in the classroom to give their best, so we are more than prepared for the graduate school. I must admit it was very tough because each week they was an exam and reading on top of reading, but I am more than grateful because I felt as if my education was very special, and I was getting something that no one else was getting. To tell the truth, I leaned more toward social work from the get-go, but telling my family that I wanted to be a Social Worker, they said “No Lilli, you don’t want to take people’s kids away.” And I would say “Yes, I know that. I want to do psychotherapy, and I would have to go to graduate school.” And their reply was something along the lines of just get a four-year degree in something that made a lot of money, so I didn’t have to worry about any of that. It was very difficult for me, so I convinced myself that I wanted to go the psychology route, and that was that.

As a child, I would spend my weekends venturing into the art of potion-making. I would dress in an old apron and imagine myself as a scientist concocting “medicines” of lotions, soaps, and nail polishes for “pharmaceuticals.” I reflect back on this and realize that even in adolescence, I had a passion for science, but never would I have imagined that my future would hold college labs for the UCR Summer Research Program, which helped me officially decide that I wanted to enter medicine. During the summer of my junior year, young chemists and myself worked in the labs of four chemistry professors at UCR to aid graduate students with their research. Every experiment conducted could be applied to everyday life, everything is connected, and everything
The Profession of Social Work as a Career Goal Graduating from high school, I have always had a passion working with kids. I never put into thought exactly what I wanted to do with kids, all I knew was that I wanted to work with kids. At first, my career choice was to become a midwife. There were several complications down the road, in which I could no longer pursue that career choice.
I want to strive to be a better person, so I could make a change in a young person’s life and know when I go home on a night, that I made a difference and that's why I want to pursue my career as a social worker. When I realized that I wanted to be a social worker, I was in my junior year of high school. I knew I wanted to help people, children especially, but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to go into. I thought I wanted to be in Neonatology or another profession like it. When I first witnessed a social worker, I was getting a treatment in the hospital and saw a social worker working with a family who child had a broken pelvis.
My goal is to become a counselor . I wanted to study social work because I have always been inspired to help people. Even now, as I look at social work, I work at the Crisis Nursery because I can help families going through a crisis. Throughout my life, I have always enjoyed volunteering and helping people. I believe that UMSL will be a great place to help me set things in motion to be the best social worker I can be.
During my college experience I changed my major a few times. However, during my junior year I discovered the social work major and everything clicked. At first the social work career clicked for me because it enabled me to be in a position to really help individuals’ during their times of need. However, my social work classes really shaped my identity and development because the classes made me realize how unhealthy my family was and to realize that I had experienced abuse throughout my life. Before my social work classes I was in denial about how unhealthy the experience in my life
It would be a great honor to have this opportunity, as this would be a stepping-stone in accomplishing my life long dream to become a Social Worker and serving those in need. Over the past years I have gain a tremendous amount of experience that have helped in shaping me to becoming competent in this field. I have also been exposed to a wide variety of population in which I have earned knowledge and a comprehensive amount of understanding. A particular experience was when I interned at St. Barnabas Hospital, there I gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about compiling shelter packages, and assisting clients in gaining access to long term or short term rehabilitation and providing other services.
There are many reasons why I want to be a social worker. When I was young, my family went through some traumatic changes. To help me cope, my mother sent me to see the school social worker. I spent loads of time in a social worker's office for most of my life so I’ve been lucky to have a firsthand experience with the work done by social workers. I’ve seen the changes and differences that are made in people's lives and I want to be a part of that.
During my life I have experienced many different human services, for example, my experience as a foster child helped to mold my current educational path. There were many services I can remember, but my most experienced included: Social workers, Drug counselors, and Child Abuse Workers. From the age of 3 till I got legally adopted at the age of 18, I was involved in one or all of these services, because of my parent’s abuse. First, I was first introduced to a social worker when I about 9 years old, when I was taken away from my mother, and I was placed into foster care for about 6 months.
My journey at Norfolk State University has been a series of challenging experiences, I have seen heights that I never thought were possible, and have overcome a lot of obstacles as I reflect. This spring semester marks the beginning of my senior year here at Norfolk State University and I am looking forward to obtaining my degree in the field of Social Work. I am both frightened and excited by the unknown experiences that lay ahead, however I am eager to embark on my career as a practitioner. This is where the rubber meets the road and I apply what I have learned in the classroom to the field experience. The Core Competencies and the values are the foundation of Social Work, and it is my duty to reflect the foundation in my intern experience.
Becoming a social worker has been a dream I’ve had for several years. I have a strong desire to help individuals better their lives. By improving their quality of life, I would be improving their outlook on life; creating happiness in their lives. Happiness is a contagious emotion; by expressing their happiness, they may be able to put a smile on someone else’s face. As the happiness spreads, I believe that communities would grow stronger.
