Fear is a Barrier
Fear is a defense mechanism that tries to protect us, but at times that fear becomes an obstacle between an individual and their dreams, and that fear can be worse than the actual consequences. In The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho fear is portrayed as a barrier that needs to be overcome, and it is portrayed by Santiago’s heart, the Crystal Merchant, and the Camel Driver. Santiago’s heart is a symbol of his intuitive voice and how fear can affect it. The heart represents the inner fear and doubt that lead Santiago to hesitate about following his dreams. The Crystal Merchant represents a life lived in fear of an uncertain future. Oppositely, the Camel Driver symbolizes a person who doesn’t let fear rule their life.

People need not fear the unknown if they are capable of achieving what they need and want." (73) This quote highlights that fear can hinder people from reaching their full potential, preventing them from making progress and reaching their full potential.. Don’t let fear become an obstacle; if you are capable, you will reach your goal. "We are afraid of losing what we have, whether it’s our life or our possessions and property. But this fear evaporates when we understand that our life stories and the history of the world were written by the same hand." (73) This quote suggests that if a person understands that they are a part of something bigger than themselves, they should have no cause to fear anything. The camel driver implies that God determines each person's role in the greater universe. This insight doesn't stop someone from going through disasters, but if they understand that their tragedy serves a greater good, they have no reason to fear any loss. There is no need to be afraid since everything in life has a greater purpose; fear is only a roadblock that will prevent you from moving forward.
