Medical Ethics Essay Is the code of ethics for physicians, medical assistants, and other healthcare professionals similar to the Hippocratic Oath? The code of ethics is a set of rules for physicians, medical assistants, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. There are different codes of ethics for every healthcare professional. The Hippocratic Oath is a promise and rules to your patients to do your responsibility as a healthcare professional. The “Hippocratic Oath” states, “I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk”, AMA Code of Medical Ethics for Physicians states, “ A physician shall be dedicated to providing competent medical care, with compassion and respect for human dignity and rights”, and the Code of Ethics for the profession of Diagnostic Medical Sonography states, “Respect the rights of patients, colleagues and yourself.” These quotes mean that healthcare professionals should show respect to their patients and the people they work with because they have been there longer, they have more experience and know what they are doing. Healthcare workers need to show their admiration to know that they are valued and will show their admiration toward the ones that show them admiration. This proves that the two codes of ethics and the Hippocratic oath are similar as they state that showing and giving respect to patients as a healthcare professional. This also proves that healthcare workers need to show and give consideration to their patients because the phrase “treat others the way you want to be treated” applies to everyone and by showing respect to patients, they will reciprocate. It’s required to be open-minded, have compassion, and be understanding. According to the “Hippocratic Oath”, it says, “I will remember that there is an art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug”, “AMA Code of Ethics for Physicians” says, “A physician shall be dedicated to providing competent medical care, with compassion and respect for human dignity and rights”, and the last evidence from “Code of Ethics of Diagnostic Medical Sonography” says, “Refrain from the use of any substances that may alter judgment or skill and thereby compromise patient care.” These quotes mean even though healthcare professionals have jobs to do, it doesn’t compare to what people are feeling, and healthcare workers should show compassion or consideration when bad things are happening in their patient’s life. This demonstrates their similarities because the two codes of ethics and the oath want healthcare professionals to show the importance of empathy toward their patients, showing their understanding and being non-judgmental. For example, if a healthcare professional has a conversation with a patient, they must be considerate of the patient’s feelings, and in any case, a healthcare worker should show sympathy or compassion.
