"Courage isn't having the strength to go on, it is going on when you don’t have strength," Napoleon. This quote defines everything Harper Lee was trying to express in To Kill a Mockingbird when she said, "Real courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what." The meaning of this quote is that you need to stand up for what you believe in, no matter what stands in your way. This quote is true because many people are scared to do things and back out. However when they do what they are scared of they prove they have bravery and are often rewarded. Examples of fighting for what you believe in can be seen in To Kill a Mockingbird when Atticus accepts the Tom Robinson case, in history when Rosa Parks refuses to give up her bus seat, as well as in current events when a thirteen year old acted selfless.

Courage is a key part of life and some people are more courageous than others. In Harpers Lee novel TKAM set in the racist town of Maycomb County, where everyone is blood related and everyone knows each other. Atticus, Scout, and Jem are the three main characters that exhibit courage: Atticus takes on an unwinnable case, Scout by sticking up to a mob, and Jem by not backing down.
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird and Of Mice And Men, almost most of the characters lie about something. People lie even if they’re innocent because they want to protect themselves from being an outcast. Calpurnia lies about being able to read, Dolphus Raymond lies about being an alcoholic, and even worse, Mayella lies about Tom Robinson raping her. All of these false accusations lead to consequences and the only reason these people did this is because they’re too worried about their social standing in their community and they don’t want to be looked at any differently than anybody else.
To Kill a Mockingbird was a mixture of sorrow and suspense in Alabama during the 1930s. “To kill a mockingbird”, is a novel written by Harper Lee, published in 1960 and later achieving the Pulitzer Prize in the year 1961. It was translated to 40 languages, along with selling over 30 million copies worldwide. During this period there were a lot of prejudice people, it took real courage and bravery to do what some of these characters did through the uneasy circumstances. Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Boo Radley showed many exemplar actions, such as courage against their town.
T. S. Eliot, a publisher and playwright, has said, “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” Courage has many ways of presenting itself to people. Whether it is through physical ways or moral ways depends on the situation. Most people see courage as physical, like a small dog saving a helpless kitten from a fire or a man jumping in front of a bullet for a loved one or complete stranger. Atticus knows that “there’s been some high talk around town to the effect that [he] shouldn’t do much about defending [Tom Robinson]” (100). However, even though his family and friends my disagree, may even think less of him, Atticus’ interaction with this case gives his cause to think greater of himself because he is fighting for what he believes in. This kind of situation is difficult when you’re opposing you’re enemies, but even harder when you are up against your friends. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. ”(Lee,149) This quote meanings is, courage is not winning the battle or even participating in it, it means knowing you going to lose the battle, but fighting anyways and dealing with the embarrassment because you know you're in the right,so standing up for the right thing even if society is against it. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.

Through these seven virtues, loving God and out neighbor we can learn to become better people. Courage is defined as the ability to do something that others are frightened by, courage also includes little acts of bravery every day. Just like Martin Luther for if he would not have had the courage to stand in front of Roman Empire we would have not heard of him today.
