USC Rossier School of Education Personal Statement
Myberson Saint-Pierre I remember as if it were yesterday. It was late August and the school year was roughly two-weeks in session. Everyone in Ohio State, 6th grade homeroom, was sitting down as Mr. Kankam and I passed out the results of the SRI and SMI tests that the students took on the first two days of school. The scholars were very despondent as they read their results. Slowly, a couple of the scholars started to cry. One scholar, Gracie, took the results very hard.
Gracie was very inconsolable. She started to call herself stupid. She mentioned how these test results confirmed what believed. She showed me her results and how the test showed that she, like many of her peers in Ohio State, was reading at a second grade level. I told Gracie that those numbers did not define her. Nor, did they measure

In undergrad I majored in English and took numerous literature and creative writing classes. I want to utilize the skills and lessons that I learned and in return educate my scholars on how express their thoughts and opinions into creative pieces of writing, dissect a passage, and read between the lines. Frederick Douglass always come to mind for me when I think of what education means, because he had to fight for it. I want to introduce the students to stories that are relatable and can teach them valuable life lessons. I was the 6th grade math teacher’s assistant two years ago. I learned how to differentiate my approach in helping the students at level they were at. I am interested in teaching in a middle school setting because I’ve come to see how important it is to get a student to be invested in their education while they are in middle school. Studies have shown that the education gap widens by the time an African American student reaches middle school. I want to be in a middle school setting to help bridge the education gap, one scholar at a
I came across and asked her on how do you describe excellence in teaching? She states, “Pay attention to their needs like what kind of assistance the kids need when learning the material, some students are fast genuine learners and the other half could be slow when it comes to certain learning material, it just depends on the students. ” I couldn't agree with it more, it was well explained and suitable. To really become a lucrative teacher, is to show how much care you have with the students and to have everybody in the same paste. So when it comes to tests such as STAAR also known as the “State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness” (Student Assessment Division, Spring 2012) they'll be ready by then.
I will actively challenge my students in content and provide them with resources specific to their educational needs. Middle grades instruction is of particular
Many of us take education for granted and don’t learn to our fullest potential, but Fredrick Douglass soaked in every piece of information up because he knew it was his way out. “Learning to Read and Write” is a famous article based on what Fredrick Douglass went through to earn a valuable education while being enslaved. Author Fredrick Douglass, wrote “Learning to Read and Write”, published in 1845. Throughout the article, he takes us through different events he goes through while being enslaved. Douglass begins building his credibility with personal facts and successfully demonstrating logic and pathos appeal.
Eagerness to learn, attention to details, and willingness to put in required effort and time, all qualities I wish to continue to practice as a student in AP English 12. As a student of organization and willingness to participate in classroom discussions and interactions, I believe those attributes of me as a student set me up for success in this class. My enthusiasm in learning has been a leading factor in my decision to apply for this rigorous course my senior year. While there are other options available this is the course best suited for me due to my attention to details and readiness to dedicate time and effort into this class. As an AP English student I am mainly interested in continuing to practice and develop reading and writing skills
The role of an educator is not only to teach the many children that come through our classrooms, it is essential to form relationships with students that makes them feel like they matter and that goes above and beyond a teacher's job. It is essential for children to feel valuable, appreciated and motivated in the early stages of their education, the reason why I am pursuing a Masters of Arts in Teaching for an Elementary level academic setting. Receiving a Bachelor’s of Arts in Education Sciences at the University of California Irvine and the leadership roles I have undertaken in my employment has prepared me to begin and undertake a Masters of Arts in Teaching
“Learning to Read and Write” by Frederick Douglass is a personal narrative which describes a specific time in his childhood when he was learning to read and write. Born as a slave in the pre-Civil War south, Douglass was not expected to be literate. However, through strong ambition, Douglass overcame restrictions and stereotypes placed on slaves and taught himself to read and write. Later in his life, Frederick Douglass wrote down this story in his book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass in 1845. Today, students and adults can enjoy this narrative on how he overcame the struggles of learning how to read and write.
Most of my field work has been in The Akron Public School District which has allowed me to gain a lot of experience with urban youth students in the Akron area. I have been placed into preschool, Kindergarten, 1st grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, and high school classrooms which has allowed me to be given a wide variety of experiences with teachers and students. During my placement in the preschool classroom, I was able to learn about the importance of including lessons that enrich each area of a child’s development. While working with the Kindergarten students, I was able to observe a classroom that was run based on centers and small group instruction. I enjoyed working with the students in this classroom as many of the centers were game based which established a fun way for the students to learn.
I am Michelle and are currently working on a Master’s degree in Marriage, Family Counseling. In Spring 2015 I graduated with a Bachler’s degree in Criminology option Victimology. Prior to attending Fresno State I started off at Merced College. I spent three years at the junior college where I obtained an Associate degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology. Throughout school I have learned that I enjoy helping others especially children and women.
The more I don’t know, the more I know. The more I realize I don’t understand, the more I discover my desire to know more about psychology. My interest in educational psychology was triggered by my first experience in changing schools.
I personally believe that a big part of the mission for many high schools across the country is to help guide the students with what they want to do with their life. Students are at the point in their life where they are picking a career and possibly a college. I want to be there to help students figure out what they want to do and how to accomplish those goals. The students in high school are starting to be independent people and I think it is part of our job to help them prepare for their future endeavors; whether it be continuing their education or attaining a job upon graduation, and to encourage them and be a support system along the way.
The facets of a classroom are a mystery to me but a mystery I’m eager to discover. As I obtain more knowledge about how schools and classrooms function as well as the expectations placed on teachers, I feel myself slowly shaping how I would like to teach. Though it is certainly an idyllic perspective, new, and largely based off of my personal experiences from the six different public schools I went to I believe that optimism remains the best approach toward success. I know that with time my opinion on my role as a teacher, my perspective of a diverse classroom, how I will teach my students, and even where I teach are all likely to change; however, I feel as though I now have a foundation to begin on. Why I want to teach feels like it should be the easiest question to answer; however, it remains the hardest to put into words.
I always relied on my parents for everything I needed. If I was ever in need my parents were the first people I went to until a few months ago. I am so grateful for everything my parents do but I would have never truly understood the depth of their responsibilities until I took some responsibility upon myself, by getting a job. I never realized how many things my parents provided me with and how valuable those things were.
Have you ever dreamed of travelling to another planet? As scientists explore nature and the cosmos, new technologies are created. These technologies are used in the modern world for everyone to enjoy. New technologies help us discover more about our universe and the other galaxies. For example the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits outside Earth’s atmosphere, takes high resolution images that allow for a view into space and time.
I am applying to study Psychology because I enjoy studying explanations of human behaviour such as from social perspectives like Bandura's social learning theory, or from neurons and DNA with concepts such as concordance rates. Since I've studied Psychology I've noticed it a lot in everyday life such as in the health care system when it comes to treatments and rehabilitation for depression and OCD, this makes it interesting for me because I am studying relevant issues that are happening now. Psychology interests me because there is so many different branches of it that you can explore in depth such as Social Psychology, Consumer Psychology or Criminal Psychology, this is interesting because they all have different explanations of why humans behave in the way they do which give lots of different viewpoints on individuals' actions and ways that abnormal behaviour could be improved. Also, the experimental part of Psychology interests me because I enjoy the analytical aspect of looking at if an experiment will be unethical or not, and whether it was a suitable way of proving a hypothesis.
I would like to apply for medicine because of its interdisciplinary nature between natural sciences, humanities, and ethics which are the subjects I am passionate about. Healthcare professionals were people I looked up to since I was a child when I often visited the hospital. It took me a few years to decide that I wanted to work as a healthcare profession. I also gained inspiration from a quote by Mahatma Gandhi: "Be the change you wish to see in the word.". With a community service center in Nepal, we went to a medical project from the capital city to a village when I was 12 years old.
