According to dictionary.com, a hero is “a man of distinguished courage admired for brave deeds and noble qualities”. A hero is one who stands up for what he believes in and who helps other people. Chris Kyle proved that he is a military hero by putting his life in danger to protect others, claimed to have killed over 250 insurgents, and to cope with PTSD, he tried to help other veterans with PTSD. He called his wife from Iraq during a gunfight to tell her it was time for him to come home. After his return home, he founded CRAFT International, which is a training company for the U.S. military. He also founded FITCO, a company that provides free in-home workout equipment for soldiers suffering from PTSD and who are disabled. Even as PTSD was affecting his life, he still put the military veterans first in trying to help them recover.
But after his return, he was not happy at home and could not adjust to civilian life. Chris went to a doctor who diagnosed him with PTSD. As a treatment for PTSD, the doctor suggested that Chris should work with other veterans who also had problems with PTSD and adjusting to civilian life. This eventually led to his death. Chris and a friend were killed at a shooting range trying to help another veteran coping with PTSD. Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield were shot and killed on February 2, 2013, by Eddie Routh who was suffering from PTSD. Some people do not agree that he is a hero and think that he should not be depicted as a hero. He was paid to kill and was seen as a bully. There is also some discussion that Chris lied a lot about the number of kills and other military information. He was even caught in a lie about Jesse Ventura, and that part was removed from newer printings of his autobiography. Some are concerned that he did not feel bad about the children he has killed. However, most of controversy is unnecessary because Chris Kyle’s military career speaks for itself.
Many honors were bestowed on Chris throughout his 10-year military career. He earned two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars. In addition, he was awarded Navy and Marine Corps Accommodation Medal and two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals. Chris also earned two Purple Heart Medals for being injured in battle. Chris Kyle was an amazing Father, Husband, and none the less a fantastic marksman. Eddie was a war veteran and suffered from post traumatic stress. Chris and his best friend, Chad Littlefield, were both gunned down in the attempt to help Eddie. They were pronounced dead at the gun range.
This quote shows Chris’s frustration with his friend’s death “it was my fault, it was my idea to go on that rooftop and because of me he got shot” (Kyle 179). Chris may have felt guilty that his friend died and he did not, so he deployed to relieve himself of the guilt. I also wondered why did Chris did not shoot “the butcher” when he had the chance. Chris watched the butcher drag a man in to the middle of the street and kill him because “the butcher” found out that that man had given the Americans tips of where insurgents were hiding. Chris had a chance to shoot the butcher but he decided not to shoot.
He wasn’t afraid of not coming back alive. So when he went into the wild in Alaska, Chris felt like he was for sure going to come back and publish the book that he has written throughout his journey to show others that taking risks like this is totally okay. Unfortunately for Chris it wasn’t okay. I believe that he did not intend to “kill himself” for going into the wild with basically nothing.
