Summary
In “children need to play, not compete” writer Jessica Statsky stresses upon the negative effects of organized sports on children. She claims that when all the “adult standards” are imposed on the children they are not valuable. She also states that these sports are developmentally inappropriate for the growing bodies of the children and also affects them phycology. These sports emphasize on the winning aspect that is pushed further by the parents and the team coaches who expect more from the children in the result of which children are pressurized.in most of the cases the children who lack self-confidence are neglected and are left behind because of the coaches preferring the children with more developed skills. Moreover, these sports

As the writer explains the organized sports have many negative effects on a child’s development and growth. The way Statsky explains her ideas on the basis of facts and examples that it is hard to overlook them. Sports activities are designed to promote teamwork and cooperation but if adult standards are imposed on a child it might ruin the physical health as well as affect the child mentally.
The basic aim of sports is to encourage the teamwork spirit and to emphasize fitness, self-esteem, and sportsmanship but if the children are forced to follow the adult principles they may hurt themselves physically and psychologically. The coach may be trying to make the child strong but the rules are made for the adults to practice because they are already physically strong. The growing bodies have a negative effect of it. I agree with Statsky that may children back out because of the stress and the constant degrading. When I used to take part in any sports I had to face the same problem. I was physically weak so my coach used to mock me in front of other players. This resulted in me backing out of every single sport I took part

This may be true in a way that the child is not happy to perform his task and he thinks of it as a duty. During the game, the child only thinks about winning the game. The main aim of the sports it buried under the stress of winning. The mind of the child is altered and he constantly thinks of his victory in every case so this may result in the wrong development of his brain. This may make it a child’s habit to consider everyone his rival and will teach him not to cooperate with anyone in the future. So if the coach emphasizes on the teamwork and teaches the children how to have success in a team it would be healthy for both the child and the
Parents do not see the real harm they could be causing their child by not letting them participate in such sports. Children learn numerous great lessons from getting to be a part of a team, which they can take and use for the rest of their lives. Jeb Golinkin, uses his essay, “Why Parents Should Let Their Kids Play Dangerous Sports”, to argue that no matter how dangerous a sport may be, children can receive
In “Do Sports Build Character or Damage it?” Mark Edmundson explains the pros and cons of children who grow up playing football. Firstly, he believes the perseverance it takes to show up for hard practices is useful later in life. Especially when they get frustrated with something and don’t notice the little bits of progress they are making.
These standards require hours of training and exhaust the child mentally and physically. I remember that my training for football required intense running and exercise that once made me pass out. The hectic routine made me tired and fatigued. This can prove to be harmful to the growing bodies of the children. Thus, I totally agree that these standards are to be removed from children sports.
Jessica is concerned that as the growing trend of these competitive sports focuses more on winning, the true essence of the sports like team spirit and
Of the 11 dimensions’: positive team dynamics, trying hard, and positive coaching were listed as the three most important factors of fun. Another figure that was calculated was the importance of playing time and this resulted in “80% of players, 93% of parents, and 94% of coaches indicated that playing time was very-to-extremely important to youth sport competition” (Visek 4). On page 6 and 7 of the article, they list the 11 dimensions and the 81 fun-determinals, and under the category of trying hard; competing, working hard, and setting and achieving goals were highly chosen by the subjects of the survey. The study establishes a fundamental point of enjoyment in youth sport, but also reveals how competition is important in the development of a child. The results contribute to both my and Klosterman’s arguments on competition in youth sports.
Many children and adolescent are redirected to organized sport to support their psycho-social developments. At the beginning of adolescence period and in some sports in childhood, the discovered talents start to train excessively to specialize in sport and to compete at elite level at the end of their adolescence period and in young adulthood (Fraser-Thomas Cote & Deakin, 2008). Certainly in pursuit of this path, coaches have critical influence on athletes. According to a study that reported in a book of Coaching Association of Canada, 96 % of the young athletes stated that coaches have greater effect on their behaviors than parents, peers or teachers. In addition, Tomlinson and Yorgancı (1997) found that the coach’s decisional powers can exceed
Coaches should teach the children how to have fun, the rules of the game, and leave the strategizing out of the whole thing. Lastly to quit playing so many games at the youth level and spend a lot more time on practicing fundamentals. If you were in a school place and you had a test (a game) every other day and very little teaching of the fundamentals and studying (practices), kids would fail all the tests. We have set kids up for failure in sports by having so many games and so few practices. Shuman3
Sports can help children live out a healthy, active lifestyle and maybe extend their life expectancies. Being more physically active can help a child be more effective in sports and easily excel faster in their designated sport. To summarize, organized youth sports may be favorable towards a youth’s mental and physical health, but there are more drawbacks than
Sports create many opportunities for kids and permit them to learn lessons which they might not learn in the normal classroom;
Children being vulnerable to harmful situations, such as the ones listed above, is one of the main reasons that the total number of children participating in competitive sports has been diminishing over the last few
Children are playing just to win and the real spirit of the game fades out. (Word count: 196) Response I strongly agree with the point of Jessica Statsky in “Children Need to Play, Not Compete”. The way Statsky explains the facts by referring to other people is not questionable. The parents forcefully ask their children to join sports for the development of their bodies and mind.
Competitive sports provide a community which kids can work with and beat other teams with. “Playing a sport helps children develop social skills which would benefit them even when they grow older. Playing sports teaches them about teamwork and cooperating with others. They learn to interact with people from different ages” (Mahaseth). When these kids grow up, they can use these skills to be able to cooperate and talk with their colleagues.
Kids need competition, but not to much. When more pressure is put on from coaches during a game it makes the game two times more competitive. It is really tough for coaches to be able to tell if the pressure it is affecting the kids but they have to be cautious because their words mean a lot. During game action coaches have the most influence on
The author Thelma Gomez, says “Playing sports is an important elemen5t in the lives of many American children.” And she is correct. Sports can make kids the next David Wright, the next LeBron James, the next Eli Manning, or the next Lionel Messi. The best part of sports is that you're improving your physical health, psychological health, social skills, and academic benefits. Physical and phychological health can benefit a child in many ways.
How Competitive Sports is Beneficial Children at a young age have a lot of energy, To solve that problem, they are sometimes put into a competitive sports team. Many will disagree and say that this is unacceptable , while others say that it is beneficial. Children should be able to be put in sport teams because most children play sports as a passion, and it not only benefits them with being athletic and healthy, It's also favorable to children because only its a game, it also teaches children morals, and life lessons. One reason Children should be able to play sports, is that playing sports is beneficial to the kids health.
