My Philosophy Statement on Adult Education Adult Education is key to a lot of successful individuals in the world. There are many individuals that go to college in order to get in a career. Education is important, because it allows students to grow into professional individuals for the workforce. When I am at my internship at Morgan State University I realized how impactful it is to help students. The reason why I wanted to study Adult Education was to help individuals become leaders of the world, since I was once was an undergraduate college student. I love to communicate with students and help them with papers so they can progress, graduate, and enter the career field. In my adult education classes, I have learned about the six principles …show more content…
Adults from all ages enter into education to better their lives and themselves. As I help students in the computer lab with papers I notice that a lot of them have different majors from criminal justice, nursing, and education. All of the students are working to achieve a degree to be well established professionals in their careers. Adult Education was my goal in graduate school, because I like to help to people go to the next stage in their adulthood life. It is important that adults learn about life lessons in order to enter into a competitive society. Therefore, classes on psychology, or multicultural development can help adults learn how to cope with different stages in their adult life while being in college, or in a GED course. Another reason why is my goal to study Adult Education, because I enjoy presenting knowledge in a classroom full of adult learners through power point presentations. My goal is to become a professor teaching creative writing, poetry or a communication course because I’m very passionate about the writing and the media field. I believe that expressing through words and art is important to get away from the stresses of adulthood. Also, in my adult education classes I learned about cultural differences and adult programming. Adult programs like GED courses, resume workshops, and job fairs can help individuals go to the next level in
How to Become an Adult: Cory Mehnert’s Story Having four toddlers is a struggle. Having four toddlers and going to college seems impossible, but it isn’t. Cory Mehnert figured out a way to do it, and so can others. It’s all about finding the right college, she explains, “National Lewis had a great program for adults, so I was able to go to school while being a mom and that was really important to me.”
These types of life lessons help build the youth of the new generation. To further prove this experts say, “Learning life skills helps young people understand who they are and what they want out of life. Moreover, young people grow more aware of their own struggles and those of the people around them.” Students are able to further understand what they want to do in life
Dr. Jane Vella devoted her life to creating and developing the Dialogue Education ™ approach to adult education. Dr. Vella received her understanding on the adult learning principles from her more than 50 years experience as an educator in many countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas. She used the principle Dialogue Education in her doctoral research at the University of Massachusetts and wrote several popular books on this subject. She founded Global Learning Partners (GLP) to develop a network of practitioners of Dialogue Education approach (Core Group 2012). The Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach book is written about principles and practical steps of the Dialogue Education approach.
Comprehension alone of adult learning theories does not allow for the synthesis and reflection needed to apply the theories to real educational situations. As a practitioner, it is important to correctly apply theories of adult learning to instructional strategies to increase the learner’s success and the transfer of knowledge. Awareness of one’s cognitive development and that of the learners is an essential element to developing instruction that is relevant and provides a safe environment where learning can occur. This team learning exercise aided my understanding of how the theoretical foundations of adult education provide a framework for instructors to draw from to identify root causes that lead to learning deficits, and identify and implement solutions by application of these
On one hand, there is a belief that professionalization is essential to moving the field from a marginal status (whether real or perceived) to one that wields more influence in society. At the same time, some very basic concerns must be addressed about adult education becoming so absorbed with the elements of professionalization that this process will ultimately produce a narrowly defined mainstream that excludes many of the diverse voices of those people who engage in its practice" [14]. The approach to adult learning and education can be made, therefore, from different perspectives which are oriented either towards personal or societal development. The second part of our paper is concerned with adult education following andragogy principles as defined by Knowles where we analyse the results of the survey addressing employed students from different forms of enrolment: full attendance, low attendance, and distance
Being involved in the learning process of others is vitally important to me. I believe that as an educator, we have the capability and responsibility to help mold not only students educational goals, but to help mold them into successful adults that sill contribute to society. Many times during my life I have been a teacher, a counselor, a cheerleader and a role model for my students. Every student is at a different point in their learning process and cycle, and a good educator can find that point and capitalize on what the student needs next.
Most adults came argue that they may not have been formally taught as a teacher or educator but they have been instructed by their employer to lead a seminar, training, coaching, and teaching of some skills. Mine interpretation of this chapter is that of what programs for adults should look like. The education and training
I key takeaway for me was that even though returning to school as an adult can feel scary ,it doesn’t have to be. If you have the proper resources and help you can accomplish your dream of having a higher learning
The course that should be replaced with Adult Development and Aging should be Human Development 3800 which is Human Development and Interaction. This class serves a better purpose for the major because it’s basically about all the interactions you would face in different social perspectives and how you will apply the understanding to the human
Adult Learner's are Self Directed (Blondy, 2007). This assumption indicates that adults want to be in a learning environment that is collaborative and welcoming, where they can provide meaningful input and be involved in making decisions that affect their education (Blondy, 2007). The recommendation for improved interactive learning assignments will address this assumption. When developing these assignments, the project leader will need to ensure that students are given an opportunity to impact their own learning by working with other students to meet course and program outcomes as well as to meet any personal goals. One example of an assignment might be for students to choose a medical condition, disease or disorder that is of interest to them.
Malcom Knowles pioneered the adult learning theory but much more can be looked upon based on the various factors that affect it. Keeping Knowles theory of andragogy in mind, further studies can be done to go beyond his version and include broader perspectives in the field. Continuous research will help to know more about how adults can be engaged in learning and best methodologies to teach adults can be arrived
This quote directly represents how I feel educating is important to one's self-improvement and the improvement of the work around them. It is crucial for a person to always keep learning, its what develops the brain, helps to form our character and it is a privilege that not all people are able to get. it is when we stop learning and educating ourselves out body becomes a useless vessel. But education can't help build a better future without action, one of my personal goals is to help people, inspire them and make their lives better. I was lucky enough to have a chance of getting an education, having food on my plate and a roof over my head in order for me to become who I am today.
Reality is without learners; the organization would cease to exist. Community based organizations in adult education look to give back to the community by providing a service to community members, also known as the adult learners. The education learners receive can potentially be put to work right back in the community thus creating a cycle effect. You may find that local business support adult education programs because of the service they are potentially offering them in the way of future employees. You may like to call this a return on investment when businesses support the mission and vision of an organization.
Enlisted below is the broad classification of adult learning process into various sub-concepts such as:- • Firstly, Androgogy that is the art and science of making adults learn by an educator. • Secondly, Self-directed approach that is the need of individual to manage her or his own learning • Thirdly, Transformational approach or the psycho-cultural and cognitive restructuring of an individual due to experiences • Lastly, the class, gender and ethnicity learning that accentuate the impact of societal factors on learning. Androgogy It can be defined as the approach to become self-reliant, autonomous and self-directed by the means of experiences.
Since the adults have much experience in life, the relationship within the classroom is mutual, and all the parties readily benefit from sharing the ideas from each. Another outcome about this relationship is that the students can understand more clearly since the teaching is more of practical and motivational. From this, the teachers can effectively share their knowledge with the students and also acquire new ideas to their gains also. Another possible outcome from the teacher and student relationship in adult learning is that both the parties develop abilities and capabilities to effectively connect socially with various groups of individuals irrespective of their class or
