The colonists were losing hope for defeating the British until one day in October of 1777 when the Battle of Saratoga changed it all. The Americans won the battle. The Battle of Saratoga was the major turning point in the war. Americans had clever war strategy. The soldiers knew that the British were making their way towards Saratoga, so they slowed them down by destroying bridges and leaving fallen trees on the roads. Since the Americans knew of Burgoyne's coming, the American soldiers wanted to try sabotage his forces. With the slowing down of the British, the Americans had time to prepare for when the British would arrive. General Gates lead the troops at Saratoga and he knew when to and when not to attack. Gates had scouts stationed in trees to spy on the British. General Gates told Morgan's riflemen to fire shots at a regiment of British troops in which the riflemen killed or wounded many of the British. On October 9, the official Battle of Saratoga started. Burgoyne with his officers had an army of men waiting to attack the Americans. Gates found the British waiting on a field for the Americans, so he sent a regiment to fight back. The battle lasted all day and in the end, the Americans captured a portion of the British's defense which they won the battle. After the battle, Burgoyne thought about how he could defeat the Americans, but there was no way he could, so he decided to surrender. Burgoyne created "The Convention of Saratoga" which neither was a surrender or treaty. The British wouldn't fight anymore if the Americans let them go
After the siege of Charleston, Sir Henry Clinton traveled back to New York leaving Cornwallis in command of the British campaign in North and South Carolina. On the morning of August 16, 1780, General Horatio Gates chose to fight Cornwallis’ force even though just the previous night his men suffered the terribly infectious illness of dysentery. Gates was confident in his American army of around 3,700 soldiers because they outnumbered the British army of around 2,100 troops. The American advantage ended quickly as one thousand American troops were unable to fight due to the illness they suffered the night before.
This victory ultimately resulted in the patriots time to prepare for the next british assault the next
The British highly ranked, educated militia outnumbered the colonial army. At this point of the war, the patriots were lacking physical supplies and mental dignity from their previous losses. Despite their defeats, the patriots won the battle in Saratoga and this battle became the “turning point” of the Revolutionary War. What made this victory such a critical point of the war was behind the work of Kościuszko. His strategic planning in the fortification for Burgoyne’s army delayed the British and effectively allowed the army to win the victory.
Gates' troops forced Burgoyne to surrender his 5,700 man army near Saratoga(Scythes). This victory, a major turning point of the American Revolution, convinced France to form an alliance with the Americans against Great Britain in 1778. Tensions between Gates and General George Washington grew immediately following Saratoga, after Gates informed Congress directly of his victory rather than informing his Commander. Washington was further angered that Gates did not promptly return troops sent to help Gates during the New York campaign. General Washington was also convinced that Gates played a role in the Conway Cabal, which was a supposed plot to remove Washington from command and replace him with Gates.
History Story #1 Battle of Lexington Concord: During the wee hours of April 19 1776, Prescott warned all of the American Colonists to watch up because Prescott shouted, “The regulars are coming watch out, you will get captured and probably killed if you do nothing about it and just stay still. So, the American Colonists evacuated the place and went to a carriage! They had to come back to get the smoked fish which may have not been the best decision.
It was an excellent move on Washington’s part because the British did not even see it coming. The American Colonists were at an advantage. And because of Washington’s move they won the victory. Then everyone knew that George Washington was a terrific military leader. Furthermore, historians have pointed out that because of Washington’s victory he was most definitely going to lead his army into another battle, The Battle of Princeton (militaryhistory.com).
Cavalry units from each side stumbled upon each other and decided to retreat to wait for daylight. This is where Gates’s poor strategy came into play. He discovered that he would be fighting an experienced British Army under the command of Cornwallis. Instead of retreating, or regrouping, Gates decided that he would fight the British there. The terrain was horrible.
Benedict Arnold is one of the most infamous traitors in history, particularly the Revolutionary War. Arnold's name is coined as a traitor and has been a great controversial debate. With Arnold's hard decision in battle tactics, the choices he has made led to a huge victory for the Americans. So, without Benedict Arnold's bravery and courage, could the U.S. have won the Revolutionary War? Where would America be today if Arnold didn't make the decisions he did in battle?
In the starting years of the war, the British generally won most battles due to their far superior sea power. After the invasion of Canada, the American colonist rebellion invasions and attacks continued. Battles after battles were being fought and everywhere the anger and the revenge taking nature was visible in both the colonists and the British officials’ eyes. The next 2 battles occurred in Trenton and Princeton of New Jersey. The Battle of Trenton occurred 26 December 1776.
This loss forced the Americans to retreat to Fort Lee and Fort Washington. This win by the British gave the English a false, but much needed, confidence that they would easily win the
