Cybercide Meet Ryan Halligan, a sweet and gentle thirteen year old who was ridiculed and humiliated by peers online. His friends spread many embarrassing rumors about him and they spread quickly, and eventually led him to suicide. Things like this happens to millions of children around the world and these kids suffer from embarrassing pictures, mean texts, and horrifying social media posts. Cyberbullying is a major online issue, much worse than face to face bullying. First, cyberbullying is anonymous so it is much more damaging to the victim for several reasons. In addition, cyberbullying can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime, and it can be shown to anyone. First, cyberbullying is anonymous which makes it much more devastating for several reasons. Cyberbullying is a very difficult form of bullying to prevent and to police. No one knows who the bully is, so it makes it impossible to stop. There is no face to face interactions with the bully and the victim which gives the bully a chance to do whatever they want. From many different schools around the world, there are more reports that prove that face to face bullying happens way more often than cyberbullying. Lots of people also say that physical bullying is worse because being physically hurt is much worse than just words. They say that cyberbullying can only effect the emotional and mental aspect but not the physical aspect unlike face to face bullying. This might be true, however, there is an ancient proverb that states: sticks and stones may break your bones but words can hurt forever. There have been two unfortunate suicidal cases in recent years due to cyber bullying: one victim jumped off a cement factory tower with the one shot himself in the chest. A group of Dutch researchers decided to study the relationship between the bullying and the suicides. From 34 studies that shared close resemblance to the issue, they concluded that the children that were being cyber bullied was 3.12 times more likely to have suicidal thoughts, compared to children that were had never been bullied before. This makes it much easier to get away with cyber bullying rather than bullying in real life at the school. You never know who is hiding behind a nickname . Another key point in this case is the teenager’s’ knowledge of internet and social media. Teenagers today know how to make it hard for others to trace you.
Because of the power and influence that media has on today’s society, suicide due to cyberbullying has increased dramatically over the years. Additionally, studies have found that social media use is significantly associated with an increase in depression. The negative effects of technology and social media on mental health and well-being cannot be ignored. Children and young adults like Nate Bronstein, Phoebe Prince and Ryan Patrick Halligan all were victims of cyber bullying. According to a CBS News article many of the children were 15 years of age who were ignored by teachers years before they finally gave up.
These examples illustrate that there are more disadvantages when being bullied face to face rather than cyberbullying. First, being cyberbullied is not as painful as face to face bullying. Secondly, the effects of face to face bullying stays with you emotionally, mentally, and physically. To begin, face to face bullying is more hurtful than cyberbullying. For example, the bullies target the students who stand out, due to their ethnicity, weight, and other characteristics, which makes that child the bullies main victim.
One of the biggest issues of online communication is cyber bullying. It is defined as, ‘‘the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others” (Baas, de Jong, and Drossaert, 1). There is so much anonymity online which makes it difficult for cyberbullying to stop. From personal experience, I have been cyberbullied on social media websites like Youtube. People commented hurtful things on my videos, I was fifteen at the time, so I did not tell my parents.

Behind the screens are real people with actual feelings; some have been driven to depression, some have been driven to attempting or even committing suicide. Cyberbullying is when individuals assault other individuals on the Internet through social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so forth. The vast majority of teenagers were somehow tortured, harassed or even threatened on the web.
You think you know, but you don´t. Internet can be a very good thing. But it can also be the most dangerous thing you´ll ever use. Do you really know who the person you´re talking to, is the one he says he is? How do you know you not being fouled by a man in India, trying to steal your credit card information?
Not many victims does this for fear of retaliation; nonetheless some victims are brave enough to fight back. The effects of bullying will affect the victim’s future as they grow up to become adults. If this issue continues, he/she has a right to report the incident or fight back their bullies. All forms of bullying, including cyber-bullying, are considered intolerable and criminal at school.
