How could the Bible be unified when it was written under such a wide variety of circumstances? At least 36 authors-whether king or shepherd, fisherman or tax collector-played a part in its authorship, over a period of 1600 years, and across three different continents. Certainly, these men were not all of one mind, yet this book still expresses the story of Creation, Fall, Rescue, and Restoration throughout. It is one coherent whole with one voice, one tone, and one overarching message, shown through the unchanging nature of God, the consistent view of sin, and the all-encompassing theme of God's redemption of man-namely, Jesus. This is not so in the Bible. Though rituals and ways of serving and worshipping God may have changed through the years, the basic principles remain the same-what was sinful in Genesis was also sinful in Revelation and is still sinful today. But what was, and is, considered sin? As stated by Stephen Witmer, "… [The] Bible consistently presents sin as mainly a 'vertical' (person-to-God) offence." It is a heart matter. God's desire for our lives is: "… Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself."
