Distress or bad stress needs to be monitored in a way in which it is unable to get out of control and control the psychological emotions of an individual. An example of distress can be seen in many cases of study works and every-day life occurrences. Signs of bad stress can be physical, emotional, mental and even relational. As an individual I have experienced and struggled with a lot of distress in the past, to when I first started school and when I received my final grades for year 12. When I first began high school, the fear of not knowing anyone and meeting new people, provided many physical and behavioural signs of bad stress. I was not as motivated to play sports and was always described as a shy person throughout my first years of high schools, which is quite the opposite as what I had come accustomed too. I was able to combat these stressors slowly as I made my way into friendships and cemented my social standing in groups which erased many of the behaviours I produced throughout my early teens. The second major case of Distress that I have faced throughout my life was the summer holidays after finishing high school. I found it hard to deal with many of these stressors but by focusing on anti-stress techniques, applying these anti-stress techniques made managing distress more
Teens today are fighting a losing battle against stress. Schools pressure teens into competing in tests and even when applying to colleges. According to Noelle Leonard, PhD, a senior research scientist at the New York University college of Nursing "School, homework, extracurricular activities, sleep, repeat—that's what it can be for some of these students." Pressure from parents who expect too much, struggling with school work, applying to colleges, and participating in extracurricular activities all contribute to a teenager’s stress level. More than 27% of teens during the school year claim that they deal with “extreme stress” (Jayson Sharon, USA Today) that can affect everyday living for them, along with a majority of other stressors.

Another childhood risk factor for crime is psychosocial stressors (C.S. Allely et al., 2014, p. 293). Psychosocial stressors include traumatic events during childhood, such as the death of a close family member (293). In addition to growing up without a father, Cullen’s mother died in a car crash when he was seventeen (Jennifer Hash, 2006, p. 1). This tragic event coupled with the bullying may have caused his decision to drop out and join the navy, especially since his family was poor. R. Hill, (1949) used the term crisis precipitating event and stressor to mean a situation for which the family has had little or no prior precipitation and must therefore be viewed as problematic. He asserted that crises-precipitating events affect families differently based on hardships that accompany them. Hill defined hardships as complications of a stressor that demand competencies (resources) from the family. Whether or not a stressor led to hardship (and to what extent) determined whether a family defined a stressor positively or negatively. According to the ABCX formula the crisis – precipitating event or stressor interacted with the family’s crisis – meeting resources.
Stress involves interaction of the person and environment. To quote a definition: “Stress is an adaptive response to an external situation that results in physical, psychological and / or behavioural deviations for organizational participants” (Luthans, 1998). Stress has generally been viewed as a set of neurological and physiological reactions that serves an adaptive function (Franken, 1994). Traditionally, stress research has been oriented toward studies involving the body's reaction to stress and the cognitive processes that influence the perception of stress. However, social perspectives of the stress response have noted that different people experiencing similar life conditions are not necessarily affected in the same manner (Pearlin, 1982).
3. Review of literature 3.1 Stress and its types: Stress is an essential mediator of human behaviour. Immediate physiological response to any type of stressor facilitates survival of the species at its maximum. Despite of normal homeostatic regulatory mechanism, the stress responses can become maladaptive. Chronic stress, for example immobilization, exposure to noise, irradiations, psychological stress can leads to a host of adverse health consequences, including cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration, obesity, depression and early ageing (McEwen et al, 2004).
