Fairy tales are a way of using a big metaphor to teach children and society in general about the morals in life. Because of their moral teachings and the extensive appeal to both children and adults, fairy tales are still applicable to the lives of an average person dealing with everyday struggles. Reading fairy tales, like the famously known “Cinderella” by the Grimm Brothers, can help children who are struggling to mature or understand certain reasons for doing something in life. When taking a well-known fairy tale like “Cinderella”, and discovering its history, archetypal elements, and psychological meaning, it can help to come across deeper meanings within a story.

Specifically in “Cinderella”, there are three easily identified character archetypes, which include the earth mother, star-crossed lovers, and damsel in distress. Although it is not a human character, the earth mother is recognized as “her mother's grave beneath the hazel-tree” (Hunt). Her mother’s grave is a great example of the earth mother because whenever Cinderella comes in contact or cries to the grave, it grants whatever she is in need of, which is also known as the fairy godmother in the modern version. Cinderella and the prince share a romantic relationship that is not tolerated by anyone because of the difference in their social statuses; therefore, they are seen as star-crossed lovers. When the father says, “she cannot possibly be the bride” and the step-mother says, “oh, no, she is much too dirty, she cannot show herself” it shows how cold-hearted and unaccepting of their love they are (Hunt). The most familiar archetype seen in almost all princess fairy tales, including “Cinderella”, is known as damsel in distress. After her mother’s death, Cinderella is kept by her father, step-mother, and step-sisters in their home being used as their maid. When she escapes for one night to the ball she meets the prince, but must return to her home before midnight because she can not be seen with the prince or should not even be attending the ball. Cinderella is one of the most common archetypes used today, along with her deep story put into different perspectives. Three examples of this are Cinder by Marissa Meyer, “Cinderella” by Brothers Grimm, and “Adelita” by Tomie de Paola. Each of these stories used the archetypes of her common important family member or pet, her stepmother, and her terrible family, along with how she always has some form of work or job. Next, in all three of these books “Cinderella” always has a terrible step-family.
Determination in “Cinderella” “Cinderella”, the original fairytale, is found in a collection of stories created by the Grimm brothers. The story of “Cinderella” is used in order to display and teach children and adults a way of living. This fairytale reflects values such as perseverance and determination. Cinderella, the protagonist, is an outcast her family, as her father is her only blood relative. She is forced to do housework and is not allowed to take part fun activities or share luxuries with her stepsisters.
It is nearly impossible for a tale to be passed down generations and still stay the same. The fairy tale “Cinderella” told by the Grimm brothers is almost 206 years old, and differences can be seen between the modern “Cinderella” story and the original. In “Cinderella,” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, a young girl named Cinderella is treated like a servant by her family. Luckily she is gifted with beautiful clothing, enabling her to attend a festival, meeting her one true love. Cinderella gets married to the prince, and the step-sisters are punished by getting pecked in the eyes by birds.
We have all lived in the world of fairy tales and imagination but have we ever really focused on what intrigues us about these stories? The hero’s sacrifices and the villain’s decisive plots intrigue us the most in stories but these characteristics are what makes a character known for as a hero, villain and this is known as archetypes. This analyzation revolves around, The Princess Bride and archetypes that some of its character’s qualify of. According to my analysis, Westley portrays the hero, Prince Humperdinck portrays the villain/shadow and Dread Pirate Roberts portrays the Threshold Guardian. The first archetype that I have analyzed is a hero and I have identified Westley as the hero because he sacrifices many things in order to achieve his goal, a hero’s trademark.
Elisabeth Panttaja uses her article, “Cinderella: Not So Morally Superior,” in order to demonstrate that Cinderella is not the moral hero she is made out to be in modern versions of the ancient fairy tale. She accredits the majority of Cinderella’s triumphs to her recently dead mother in the form of supernatural gifts and assistance rather than Cinderella’s perseverance against a cruel step-family showing how she is craftier, willing to employ powerful magic to defeat the forces arrayed against her. Her argument is somewhat successful in dismantling the moral high ground built around modern day Cinderella, but Panttaja tends to interpret information to only support her argument and does not add in any
In the Movie, Cinderella gets pulled out of her struggle with help from others such as her Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming. In the movie Cinderella, Cinderella lives with her step-family. She is constantly treated unfairly and like the maid of the house. Towards the middle of the movie Cinderella and her, Stepfamily gets an invite to the prince's ball, Her Stepmother tells Cinderella that if she finishes all her chores she would be able to go to the ball. Cinderella comes down all dressed up, Her stepsisters were in shock.
The slipper reveals the flaws and cracks in the values that form the foundation of our society by being the embodiment of the human spirit. In order to comprehend how the slipper illustrates the lack of integrity in society’s morals, the influence it has on the populace needs to be considered. All three interpretations of Cinderella paints a picture of a materialistic world obsessed with wealth and status. Each variation, however, emphasizes different levels from the actions of an individual to the movement of an entire kingdom. In the Grimm Brothers version of this tale, the composition of the shoes change each day, ranging from “slippers embroidered with silk and silver”(Grimm 33) to slippers “of pure gold”(Grimm 46).

Compare and Contrast Essay Once upon a time there was a story about a girl named Cinderella. There have been many versions of this story written. There is a version for almost every culture, but they all lead back to the original version told by the Brother’s Grimm. Although the story has changed through time, the main plot stays the same. Princesses’ in Disney movies are tied down to a recurring theme: the princess that must be saved from the evil woman by the charming prince. A significant contrast to the usually weak and easily persuaded figure of the father. Abstract Most of us have grown up watching Disney films but never really thought of what they exactly mean to us. Our understanding of what it means to be a Disney princess is probably one of the reasons to what made us subject to the regulation of cultural values. Cinderella and other similar Disney princesses may be recognised as a part of an individual’s childhood but the values and ideas it conveyed can still be reflected in our decisions and behaviour as adults. Many young girls perceive Cinderella as a role model and create expectations and beliefs based on what is portrayed through her unfortunately these expectations are not fulfilled and ends in dissatisfaction.
