With its dotted yellow and red pattern on its back and a brown-green belly, the brook trout is a very popular fish that is prized by the fly fishing and angler industry. Knowing this, it isn’t a surprise that the brook trout’s habitat is disappearing and that the species is being overfished. This leads to the population of the fish quickly dwindling in smaller numbers than before.
Brook trout thrive in many environments, from lakes to rivers, and even mountain streams in the Appalachian Mountains. They are native to the Great Lakes region and some of Canada. Over time, the brook trout species been successfully introduced to many other states in the US.
Brook trout normally feed during dawn and dusk, when the sun is not high in the sky. When the weather is humid, brook trout usually seek deeper waters where it is cooler. This species of fish usually avoid feeding when human activity levels are high, due to its natural instinct to flee from predators.

The brook trout has suffered from habitat loss due to urban sprawl and clear-cutting forests, depriving it of its freshwater home. Let’s take a step to conserve wildlife for the future, preserving it for generations to

For example, “on the Columbia river, which 100 years ago boasted the largest runs of Chinook, Coho and steelhead on the face of the globe, these same fish have declined to the point of receiving serious consideration for the federal government’s threatened or endangered species list.” The deterioration of the wild salmon, according to Brown, is from logging, overfishing, hatcheries, and dams, basically all human related activities. Logging and clear-cutting damages all habitats and “literally flattens many creatures chances for life.” For the salmon it causes blockades that disrupts the fishes migrating patterns, or ruins their spawning grounds all together simply from trees being dragged across the stream beds.
N.J. Division of Fish & Wildlife The fish at Swartswood Lake are stocked by the Hackettstown Fish Hatchery. In the spring of 2007 Hackettstown Fish Hatchery set up nets at Neldon Brook which leads into Swartswood Lake. “The Hackettstown crew began their walleye broodstock collection season on April 2nd when they set one Pennsylvania and two South Dakota-style trap nets in Swartswood Lake near the mouth of Neldon Brook” (Lemon). An interesting feature of this lake is that it contains no large mouth predators of the fish. Normally, the spines of the fish keep them protected from these predators, but here in Bear Paw Lake, the spines actually decrease the fitness of the fish because the dragonfly larvae living at the lake bottom prey on the fish by grabbing them by their spines. Due to natural selection, eventually the fish in the lake population lost their spines on the undersides of their bodies.1 The fish that had low fitness due to their spines were killed and unable to produce offspring while those without spines or maybe with reduced spines lived long enough to
The Asian Carp Response in the Midwest states: “The presence of Asian carp in the Great Lakes could cause declines in abundances of native fish species. Asian carp will compete with native fish for food—native fish like cisco's, bloaters, and yellow perch, which in turn are fed upon by predator species including lake trout and walleye” (np). Another consequence is the poor quality of water that carp cause when they enter into new waters. They are known to be responsible for the unpredictable and disastrous results in habitats. As stated by Hansen, M. “Asian carp are like zebra mussels, which also prey on the base of aquatic food webs, and can thereby reorganize nutrient and energy flow with unpredictable consequences on native species” (np).
Salmon fishing, both commercial and sport, is a large industry that has created jobs for many Americans. Jobs are needed to create salmon fishing supplies, to work on boats where they are caught, to catch the salmon, and to market and sell them. Without these jobs, there would be more unemployed Americans in a country that already struggles with unemployment. The high economic value of salmon is also of vital importance to the economy. The industry is worth millions of dollars, and helps to boost the economy.
A historian named Carville V. Earle once said, “Fish are present in local streams, but only in the spring and early summer are they there in impressive abundance. ”(Blanton 55). The colonists had food but they only had enough fish to keep them healthy during the spring

The Asian carp should be removed from the Great Lakes as shown in the following paragraphs.

The Peddler and the Trout In the good old horse and buggy days, Montana was full of gold, silver, copper, and coal. Mining was important and mining camps were set up in many rough and rocky places across the state. In those unkempt camps, dusty and grimy miners sank into an exhausted sleep after working hard all day long. The miners, like the camps, were untidy and had neither the time nor the interest to tidy up.
