Macbeth instantly clings to the witches’ prophecy that he will be promoted to Thane of Cawdor and King. A shift in power is created as Lady Macbeth crafts a plot to murder Duncan, the king of Scotland, so that Macbeth may gain power by ascending the throne. The power in their marriage leans at first towards Lady Macbeth as she tells Macbeth, “But screw your courage to the sticking-place, / And we'll not fail” (I.vii.60-61). Lady Macbeth places pressure on Macbeth and ensures him that the plot will unfold rightly.
Once again, Macbeth is born into nobility just as Beowulf and Sir Gaiwan. The witches specifically state upon meeting Macbeth that, “All hail Macbeth, Thane of Glamis; All hail Macbeth, Thane of Cawdor; All hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter” (347). Readers see that he is already of nobility, as he is the Thane of Glamis but are predisposed to the future of his rising status. Macbeth, although praised for his challenging tasks and accomplishments, falls to the wayside after learning of the witches prophecies. Macbeth at first believes that, “If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me without my stir(349) but in actuality by thinking this, it means that he has thought of murdering Duncan before hand to gain the crown.
Macbeth is first introduced as Thane of Glamis, who goes to war leading the Scottish troops to victory over invading forces. On his arrival after successfully winning the battle, he meets the witches who hail him by his first title Thane of Glamis, then Thane of Cawdor, and King. This last title confused him; he wondered how he would be king if King Duncan is alive. He then sends a letter to Lady Macbeth about this revelation in which she is sold in by the thought of being queen, leading her and Macbeth to plot and execute the killing of King Duncan.

But Macbeth can be a self-doubting character who also has kindness. Another character is Lady Macbeth, who is the wife of Macbeth and is more of a dominant character who rejects feminine roles and feels little to no remorse over her mistress's. But she went insane as a result of her guilt. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth, as they both seem to have ambitions and are willing to do anything to get the crown, decide to kill King Duncan, who is king of Scotland.
Although Macbeth experiences guilt before he kills Duncan, he reaches an entire new level of paranoia and fear after he chooses to complete the plan. The Thane of Glamis has nightmares, hears voices, and refuses to talk or think about the deed. While Macbeth chooses to pin the blame on others and convinces himself that the death needed to occur, the murder was of no fault but his own. The Thane of King Duncan, Macbeth hears a prophecy that he himself will become king later on in the future after King Duncan. This then leads to Macbeth being overcome by greed. Since Macbeth greeds to be king so bad, he murders King Duncan and takes his place of the throne. Macbeth starts to live with so much guilt and fear that he commits even more murders to have his power safe. Macbeth is so confident in the prophecies that his life comes to a downfall and he gets killed by the people he did wrong.

As tragic as Macbeth becomes through the play, his paranoia is also a factor that leads to his ultimate downfall, morally and physically. Macbeth, now a traitor after the assassination of the king, is paranoid of anybody who may threaten his position or how he attained it. After killing the king, Macbeth’s conscience is guilt-ridden and he is no longer able to sleep peacefully. His only worry is that someone may be plotting his murder, just as he strategized the death of the former King. Macbeth exhibits peripeteia throughout his shift from lord to king then ultimately the events leading to his death. Macbeth is the thane of Cawdor and Glamis but is given a prophecy by the three witches that he will become king. Macbeth contemplates whether or not to follow through on killing the king or staying loyal to Duncan. Macbeth choices and confirms that he had followed through on his decision to kill Duncan while speaking to his wife when he says, (2.2.19). This is a shift of character from the Macbeth first seen as the lord that fights to the death for both the country and king to the more dominant and selfish king Macbeth.
Macbeth and Banquo were seen as relatively similar individuals who acted with nobility. At the beginning, they both were loyal military leaders who fought hard for their king and their country. However, after their encounter with the Three Weird Sisters, they began to show their differences through the actions they make in regards to prophecies they were given. Macbeth and Banquo were both heroic, noble and brave leaders who led their armies to victory numerous of times. They were loyal subjects to the king, and they lived their lives continuously fighting for him as well as the country.
