The Theme Of Loneliness In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Of Mice and Men is a very lonesome Novel. Each character has their own style of loneliness and expresses the feeling in several kinds of ways. Throughout John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men, Loneliness is shown between a couple of important characters such as Lennie, Crooks, and Curley's wife.

In the first couple pages, Lennie had been going through flashback of when he was a younger man and his aunt would give him mice to stoke and pet. But for some reason he'd always accidently kill them. ¨ You gonna give me that mouse or do I have to sock you?¨ ( Steinbeck 8). George would never let lennie have a mouse, which made lennie feel like he was alone and wish his aunt was there.. Even though lennie and George, all George did was control him. George had specifically told lennie not to talk to anyone, but sometimes people get a little bit lonely. So when all the guys went into town and left lennie alone back at the barn, everything went wrong. First of all, lennie had seen the light of Crooks barn room. Crooks is a black man, ¨He kept his distance and demanded people to keep theirs¨ ( John Steinbeck 67). Lennie had entered the room.

Under Curley's control she really couldn't do much or talk to many people but she got around. Every now and then she would swing around by all of the boys and get a little flirty and the guys would never fall for it. She would have to be one of loneliest characters in the novel. First of all, Curley really controlled his wife and never let her do anything and she hated it! Every Time she would appear in the novel she would always say something like ¨Why can't i talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely¨ ( Steinbeck 86). Also, when she was talking to lennie before he had murdered her, she was telling him how she doesnt like curley at all and how she thinks he's a mean guy. Once again another character that just wanted someone new to talk to. There seems to be a pattern
