I was born and grew up in a city called Changle in the south-east of China. It is a small and peaceful place where some people may never have connections with police or criminal justice. I had never heard any crimes related to guns nationwide, and I was never afraid of shooting crimes would happen when I was there. Only some of the law enforcement officers can equip and use guns. In real life, the only situation I would see guns was the escorts holding guns in front of banks, and I did not think those were real. Most of the time, “Gun” was a word that I would see or read in books or through the news. Much gun-crime news I read happened in the United States, and what I thought were simply like it was scary. After I moved to the United States, …show more content…
A higher level of obtaining guns equals to more violent deaths to all ages includes homicide, suicide, and unintentional firearm deaths (Miller, Azrael, Hemenway, 2013). Firearms have strong lethality and generally have longer range than other weapons such as knives which make people hard to run away or self-defense. Also, once the guns are fired, generally speaking, there is going to have at least wounded, and there is little time allow people to react. Even though passing a background check mandatorily to purchase a gun may be helpful to deter potential shooters, I think it is still unpredictable what would a person do with a gun, and it is too risky to trust people’s rationality of not doing harms with guns. Recently, one another school shooting just happened at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida which caused 17 deaths and 14 injured. Seeing the pictures of survivors and victims’ families crying is heart-breaking. Some witnesses declared that they saw some students tried to fight back, but clearly, it could not stop the perpetrator, Nikolas Jacob Cruz, because of who armed with an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle. Although people tried to run for their lives, the shooter could still take their lives at a distance with a rifle. I understand that when someone wants to commit a crime, he or she would come up with many ways to commit it, but guns definitely provide an easy way to cause massive
Every time a shooting happens. It feels like we have the same conversations. We ask the same questions. The debate never changes. We have a script for things like this and everyone has a general idea of what people will say.
Guns are extremely powerful weapons. They can cause destruction, harm or even death. They can be used to defend and protect or to threaten and kill. Any way you look at it, guns are powerful tools, not only physically but socially.
The shootings that have happened in schools throughout America over the past few months has divided Americans on what they need to do as a nation to stop additional shootings from occouring. Many believe that creating new laws on buying weapons by requiring background checks, holding adults liable for the actions of their kids and requiring safety devices on weapons to stop youngsters will stop these massacres in schools from happening, it 's a step in the right direction, however, it 's not good enough nor is it effective enough, America needs well regulated gun laws and the politicians must understand that the laws should be based on facts, not opinions. There are several problems that need to be looked at in order to determine which laws are necessary. According to a recent study, America has the highest amount gun related deaths every year in the world. “Germany, has 371 gun related deaths, France 255, Canada 165, the united kingdom 68, Australia 65, Japan 39 and America, 11,200”.
Even though there are many people argue “the guns do not kill people but people do”. However, Evan DeFilippis states, in his article “Debunking the Guns Don’t Kill People, People Kill People Myth”, that the gun itself is not able to harm, and guns become harmful when people hold them. He highlights that when people hold a gun, they tend to kill more often and more efficiency than those who do not have a gun. He illustrates this is because the environment may affect people’s behaviors. If the surrounding environment is that everyone has a gun, people become more fractious and they may not able to control themselves under extreme emotions.
I understand that if everybody had a firearm it would raise the murder rate tremendously, but one must admit should be a little harder to get a gun, just cause you don’t have a criminal background does not mean you are not capable of doing the same actions a criminal. The gun control law should be made to where if you wanted to purchase a firearm, that you
Gun control is what restricts people from buying and using guns, but these laws are not strengthened at the extent they need to be strengthened. This leads to many people getting these guns and using them to cause mass shootings all over the U.S. For example, according to the Council on Foreign Relationship, a news article that covers major world issues, in 2017, mass shootings at a music festival in Las Vegas and at a church near San Antonio have rekindled the gun control debate (“U.S. Gun Policy: Global Comparisons”). The fact that gun control is still not tightened is a huge margin and error, and still causes mass shootings as we just covered. Many people have said that we should not allow guns to be purchased, which would seem like the logical option. However, according to the same source, Council on Foreign Relationship, some states, such as Idaho, Alaska, and Kansas, have passed various laws attempting to nullify
In modern society, guns are seen as a form of control. Those who have guns are able to overpower those who do not. This trend was set when guns were first invented and has stayed the same throughout history. The one place where guns are not a symbol of power and control is in literature, specifically “The Old Gun” and Hamilton. In Mo Yan’s short story “The Old Gun”, the protagonist is a hungry boy who does not even know how to use the titular firearm.
A criminal will always have a weapon and a way to get more weapons, criminals do not follow the law. In Chicago, they have some of the strictest gun laws in America, but the shootings still increase; they have had at least 141 people shot and over 40 deaths since the start of 2018. No
The nationwide availability of these guns creates a major problem regarding who buy them, from general gun stores, to gun shows / conventions, to even Walmart, getting ahold of a gun is still pretty easy in this year. Especially at gun shows though, some where you ¨don 't have to go through a background check when they make a purchase at a gun show¨ (Smith). Aaron Smith, a writer from CNN, claims in his article about how easy it is to obtain a weapon, and how although shootings seem to go up, gun control laws seem to stand still. Without making it rules for obtaining these guns then how can we continue to be surprised by the constant mass shootings perpetrated by these criminals?
In the past, the major gun control legislations that have been put into effect have not stopped people from obtaining firearms (Gun Control.) There have also been cases in the past where cities have attempted to ban handguns. After the ban was put into effect, murder rates tended to rise instead of drop, unlike what most people might assume. Crime rates and violence also skyrocketed after the bans were put into effect. Another problem with taking guns away, or banning them, is that the government cannot expect everyone to abide by the laws.
They can be used to defend and protect as well as to threaten and kill. Guns and crime go together. A study conducted by the American Journal of Public Health found that the legal purchase of a gun seems to be associated with an increased risk of violent death. Every year, Americans are shocked by numerous mass shootings and senseless acts of violence involving guns and weapons. And, every year around 100,000 people are shot among which 18,000 are children and teens (Lane, 131).
In 1637 about 100 Massachusetts Bay colonists were ordered to surrender their “guns, pistols, swords, powder, shot & match”, said Barbara Mantel. In 1813, Kentucky and Louisiana became the first states to ban the carrying of concealed weapons. In 1986, the NRA scored a victory when President Ronald Reagan signed into law the Firearm Owners ' Protection Act. Currently about six states must have insurance on their gun. “Insurance will cover you if your home burns down in an electrical fire, but it will not cover you if you burn down your own house, and you cannot insure yourself for arson,” said Robert P. Hartwig, Garen Wintemute had some very good points to back up his belief.
Back then there were a lot more uses of guns. For hunting, protecting your home, to make sure the new government doesn’t become a Monarchy, and to protect against another country invading. We don’t need any of those! Instead of hunting you can go to the grocery shop and buy food, we now have police so if someone is invading your home then call the police and hide and if worst
The number of incidents of gun violence last year in the United States was about 60,000. In recent years, the number of mass shooting has risen to about one mass shooting per day in the United States. The country is divided with some wanting to reevaluate our gun control laws and either ban or add additional regulations to the purchase of guns. Others say it is our right for Americans to own guns and something the founding fathers considered important to put in the Bill of Rights. The number of firearm sales has risen with the number of mass shooting many Americans question if banning guns or certain guns could help decrease the number of gun violence deaths.
With tougher gun control laws, there will be a lesser chance of another shooting. Owning a weapon makes a person feel safer. Pew Foundation report found that “79% of male gun owners and 80% of female gun owners said owning a gun made them feel safer and 64% of people living in a home in which someone else owns a gun felt safer.” The truth is owning
