High School Start Time
Ding! Ding! Ding! My alarm is going off at 6:30 in the morning on a school day. NO!! Five more minutes, please! I dread waking up early for school because I love my sleep and I do not get enough of it, as most teens don’t either. I believe high schools should start at a later time.
As a result of a later start time, many students could improve their grades. Morning classes are a struggle for many teens to perform their best in, causing them to get low grades. But with a later start time, teens would be more likely to stay awake and focused during class because they are well-rested. Also, having more time in the morning before school means they could have time to study for a test and/or eat breakfast. When we had a two-hour delay, I was able to study for a test before school because it was easier for me to get up, which allowed me extra time to get ready. If high schools would start at a later time, then many teens could improve their grades by having more time in the morning to study and to eat a healthy breakfast.

But if high school started at a later time, then a student-athlete would not have to worry about getting home late at night from a game and trying to finish all of their homework with only getting some sleep. Also if high school would start later in the morning, then students would not have to miss class due to a doctor’s appointment. They could get their appointment done with before the school day even
In her essay “Me, My Sleep, And I”, writer Priscilla Srikanth argues that high schools should start later in the morning to ensure that students are well rested, energized, and focused during the school day. She accomplishes this by utilizing rhetorical questions and an anecdote that allow the reader to reflect on their past experiences with the idea of a late start, a logical fallacy that encourages the reader to view the situation from the writer’s perspective, and an appeal to logos to further strengthen her argument. Leading into her essay with rhetorical questions, Srikanth urges the reader to ponder about times that they have felt like never leaving their cozy bed. In this way, the writer creates a sense of likeness between herself and the reader. By appealing to ethos through an anecdote, she shows the reader that she too has experienced the struggle of getting up every morning.
Last month I fell asleep in class because I was so tired from having to wake up early to go to school. I just couldn’t stay awake in class, because I had to wake up at 5:45 for school and go to school. I was so embarrassed, because the teacher had to wake me up in front of the whole class, and everyone was laughing at me. I am always so scared to go to that class because I feel I will fall asleep and everyone will laugh at me just like they did before. Schools should start later because students will be more attentive, they will get better grades and have a higher chance of graduating.
If the schools started later in the day absences would drop. Students being late is a big problem in their grades. Kids wake up early in the morning because sometimes their schools start early. When they wake up early in the morning their body still says that it is time to sleep. If we have classes that are later than kids will attend school more and get more sleep.
According to Dr. Kyla Wahlstrom in a Public School District in Minneapolis, Minnesota, when school times were changed to start later results of her studies showed that 9th-11th graders attendance increased, grades improved, and decreased depression rates reported by students(Should High School Students Have a Later Start to the School Day?). This illustrates that with schools starting later in the day, students will have more time in the mornings to prepare for classes. This means less tardy students and “fewer dropouts''. The kids will have more time to debrief before school starts again. They will have more time to sleep which will improve their grades(attention).
The time a high school starts can influence the education, habits, and health of its students. Many people believe that starting the school day later will have the most beneficial effect on learners. However, assuming the length of the school day stays the same, then an earlier start time would actually be a better choice. The benefits of an earlier start time begin with a plethora of after-school activities.
If school were to start later, then students would miss even more of school. They could miss an important test or crucial notes for a test. School starting later would mean minimal time for the simple pleasures in
According to “Should Schools Start Later?” by Junior Scholastic, “A later start, say opponents, also interferes with some teens part time jobs” (Scholastic 21). If schools start later, it would interfere with the teens work schedule. This would then cause the teens to be early on their shift and mess up a lot of people, which could result in them getting fired from their job. If schools stayed to the usual time schedule it would not cause any mix ups or confusion.
If high school students were to go to school one hour later, than elementary students would have to go to school one hour earlier. This would cause a problem for students who watch their younger siblings after school because they would get out one hour later.
I’m pretty sure most people hate getting up super early in the morning to get to school. Am I right? Well I think it’s the worst! In my opinion, I think school should start later because it is better for one’s health and it’s better for students’ concentration in class.
Would you want a student going to class half asleep? Lots of kids don't do well in school because they are not very well rested, and starting school later in the day could prevent that from happening. Health could be at risk if kids went to school too early because they wouldn’t have enough time to sleep which would most likely disturb their immune system. If schools started later, than more kids would show up and they would be more attentive which would lead to better grades. I believe schools should start later in the day because it gives kids more time to sleep, helps adolescents perform academically better, and can improve a youth’s health.
Beep. Beep. “Uhh why do I have to go school, it’s so early in the morning.” This is a common phrase said by students that wake up early and have to go to school early. Should schools start later?
With starting later students are able to make it to school on time, causing them not to miss classes. State and national scores would improve all over
Should Schools Have Later Start Times? It is the beginning of the school day and eyes are drooping because of the lack of sleep. The National Sleep Foundation says, “The roots of the problem include poor teen sleep habits that do not allow for enough hours of quality sleep... and a clash between societal demands, such as early school start times” (1). Could this problem be solved already if school start times were later?
Starting school later helps older kids focus more. “I find that delaying school start times by one hour, from roughly 7:30 to 8:30, increases standardized test scores by at least 2 percentile points in math and 1 percentile point in reading.” This shows that school starting later helps in diffrent classes, and impacts students grades which will help them get into colleges. “Waking up earlier has cardiovascular problems, and diabetes; reduced immunity; depression; anxiety; suicidal ideation; and potential impacts on brain development.” That is not good for teens too go through and that is what our world is struggling with now
Imagine you're in highschool your sleeping about to wake up but you give yourself minutes and before you know it you missed the bus. For high schoolers that's real they have the earliest start of middle school and elementary school. Many students have reported that they have fallen asleep in school. Because the lack of sleep they get a lot of their school start before 8:00 am. But if they changed all the schools time maybe high schoolers can finally get some shut eye.
