Selena Quintanilla’s Legacy and Impact On Texans Selena Quintanilla was not only the sweetheart of Tejano music, but she was a sweetheart that everyone would always remember. She spread her spirit, love, and humbleness, not only through her music, but through her fans that she adored. Though her life was cheerful and vibrant, her death did not keep the people down, but allowed them to rise and celebrate her life as if she never passed. Quickly Selena’s music career started taking off and soon enough Selena became known all over the United States as the Queen of Tejano music. Selena was murdered on March 31, 1995 by one of the members of her fan club.

Due to U.S. governmental and economic interventions in Latin American countries, it has caused many people to migrate as refuges and flee unstable environments. These mass migrations have been followed by torturous trails and stories that many times end in death or abuse, however, other times it has allowed refugees to move away and live stable lives in the U.S. However, once in the U.S., these immigrants are faced with discriminatory policy based on false accusations that makes their lives unsafe and unprotected. Therefore, Latinx religious faith becomes a strong component of community for these groups.
Selena began classes in Oran M. Roberts Elementary School. She also attended in West Oso Junior High in Corpus. She then graduated in 1989 in a correspondence school for artist and enrolled at Pacific Western University as a correspondence student taking business classes. Selena’s whole career began when she was little. She saw her older brother and sister play the instrument and she felt left out so that's how her whole singing career began.
She made six albums between 1987 and 1994. She won a Grammy award for her album, Selena Live, in 1993. Her album, Ven Conmigo, was the first Tejano record to achieve gold status. It sold more than 500,000 copies. At the Tejano Music Awards, she obtained the award for “Best Female Vocalist of the Year and “Performer of the Year”.
By June 11, 1986, Selena y Los Dinos released the group’s third album, and their fame began to increase. 1986-1988 Selena won the Tejano Music Awards prize for female vocalist of the year for the first time and she captured the honor every year. In concert, Selena’s sexy bustiers and taunting and her pouty smiles earned her the nickname “the Tex-Mex Madonna.” Mid-1991 Selena and Chris Perez, who had recently began playing guitar, they admitted they had romantic feelings for each other, and their relationship began. April 2, 1992 they got married.
But, that all changed when she started to become popular among Tejano music fans. Leading her to win “best female vocalist of the year” and “performer of the year” at the Tejano Music Awards. In the 90s her album named “Ven Conmigo” was the first Tejano album to reached gold selling over five hundred thousand copies. In, 1993 when went on to win a Grammy for “best Mexican American album”. The following year she released another album which was called “Amor Prohibido” that also went gold.
This shows how Selena’s father passion for music did not die and his love for music was able to be exposed in his family what made him have talented children. For this reason, Abraham Quintanilla converted his garage in a studio where he could teach Selena how to sign in Spanish and continue teaching his other children how to play the instruments. While most Latin artists just sung on stage, Selena made Tejano performances entertaining by dancing, twisting, and creating steps to dance to (López 15). A role that made her exceptionally influential was how she introduced “pop, rock, rap, dance and mariachi concepts into Tejano music”(Joseph 330).
