During the colonial period numerous new things were taking place, people were gaining independence and literature was developing. By 1763 there was over 12,000 separate works published in North America. Both Chronicle of the Narvaez Expedition and Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson detail the author’s journeys during certain period of their lives. Religious devotion is apparent throughout both books in many different ways. Rowlandson and de Vaca look to God for comfort, to help them meet their needs and to guide them.

We have all seen the Disney movie Pocahontas, but what we did not know what the historical differences and similarities between the two. Pocahontas was a daughter of the chief of the Powhatan Indians, and served as a mediator for her people and the English in both the movie and her life. Though the battle of colonizing the New World and converting the Indians to Christianity was much more violent in real life. She went on to marry Englishman John Rolfe, and changed her name to a more civilized name, Rebecca and became a leader and historical figure in colonization of the New World. Later in life she would become a beckon of hope for the English that they would be able to colonize the New world and convert the indigenous people to Christianity.
Richard Wright and Zora Neal Hurston learn many different things in their autobiographical pieces. Richard Wright and Zora Neal Hurston were both African American and they both grew up in the south. Richard Wright was born on a plantation near Natchez, Mississippi, and then he moved to Memphis. Zora Neale Hurston grew up in Eatonville, Florida which was the first incorporated African-American community in the United States.
During the Progressive Era Jane Addams and W.E.B. Bois were very influential individuals, Addams helped improve women’s rights and those in poverty by co-finding Chicago’s Hull House while Bois helped the progression of African Americans by fighting for equal rights. Addams and Bois were among the most influential people in the Progressive Era reforms. Jane Addams is known as the mother of social work because the fought for the rights of minority groups. She was also a leader of women suffrages and she fought for world peace. She helped focus on issues that were of concern to mothers, such as the well-being and needs of children, local public health and world peace.
Elizabeth Browning and Anne Bradstreet both manifested their own intense feelings of love for their husbands in the form of poem. The quote aforementioned was from Elizabeth’s poem “How Do I Love Thee?”. Although Anne Bradstreet also composed a poem, “To My Dear and Loving Husband”, in which she expressed her uncontainable feelings of affection for her husband, Elizabeth Browning verified that her love for Robert Browning, her husband, was much stronger through her employment of spiritual comparisons to her love,
The poem consists of words that have symbolic meaning which depicts how the relationship is. The relationship is depicted as a very loving and caring relationship while the disadvantages of the relationship are discussed as well. In essence, the poem implies that the advantages in a true love experience overpower the challenges in a true love experience. The first stanza starts off gently to the likelihood of what seems to be great.

Jean-Jacque Rousseau - Comparisons with the above two philosophers and opinions on the State and Law. Jean Jacques Rousseau is the third philosopher I wish to discuss. He was a French-Geneva philosopher who is widely believed to have influenced the enlightenment in France and Europe. During the French revolution Rousseau was one of the most respected and popular political theorists. Rousseau believed that men in the state of nature were the most natural and free they could be before they were corrupted by the unnatural grips of civilization.
Romance comes in all different forms and sizes, and Calbert understands that along with these she apprends why people fall in and out of love. Falling in love has a sense of vulnerability that requires taking risks that people are “willing to fail, / why we will still let ourselves fall in love,” in order to sustain real love. Calbert ends her poem with listing the romances with her husband and vows, “knowing nothing other than [their] love” because that is all that matters to her

Zhe Xie Ms. Zylka English III April 20 2016 Both The Great Gatsby and the Of Mice and Man, are novels that represents authors’ lives, John Steinbeck’s George and Fitzgerald’s Gatsby, two outwardly different characters, are disillusioned with the American Dream, but for opposite reasons. George and Gatsby are both lonely, although the life they lived are completely different from each other, one is rich the other is poor.
The two poems I will be comparing and contrasting in this essay are two of William Shakespeare 's most popular sonnets. Sonnets in chapter 19, 'Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? ', and in chapter 23, 'Let me not to the marriage of true minds, ' of our Literature book. Both of these poems deal with the subject of love but each poem deals with its subject matter in a slightly different way. Each also has a different purpose and audience. In the case of 'Shall I compare thee ' the audience is meant to be the person Shakespeare is writing the sonnet about.
Donne 's poem showcased a more refined explanation of love, while Shakespeare simply defined what it should be. What stood out most from Donne’s poem was the ability to make it personal. Every line makes the reader feel something; it draws the reader into the text and allows them to make connections. Shakespeare just doesn’t do that; he sticks to the definition love and gives no opportunity to add personal meaning to his writing. When talking about love, a poem must make a connection.
