She starts accusing people that she doesn’t like of practicing witchcraft, including Elizabeth Proctor. Elizabeth Proctor is John Proctor’s wife, and Abigail doesn 't like her because she wants to be with John, who she had an affair with. Abigail thinks that by accusing Elizabeth of witchcraft Elizabeth will be killed and then she can finally be with John. During these witch trials, many other people were accused and blamed for things that they did not do. It was mostly because of Abigail and her friends were lying about innocent people doing witchcraft.
Abby said "She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a—" to John and the court. Abby was lying though because she really did have an affair with John.
Abigail worked for Elizabeth Proctor as a maid in the house. Later fired amidst an affair with John, Elizabeth's husband. The accusations didn't end there; as the orphan desired to end the conflict with Elizabeth. Abigail proceeded to spread rumors saying that Elizabeth was bewitched. Salem, being a very religious village, had very harsh consequences for those accused of witchcraft.
One of the motifs that Arthur Miller uses to enhance the theme of the story is abandonment. During The Crucible, John Proctor had an affair with Abigail Williams causing Abigail to be fired from working in the Proctor’s household by Elizabeth Proctor. Because of this, Abigail has lost touch with John and he no longer has any feelings for her which has made Abigail feel abandoned. As voiced by Abigail Williams, “John - I am waiting for you every night” (Arthur Miller 1246) and stated by John Proctor, “Abby I never give you hope to wait for me.” (Arthur Miller 1246), It validated how Abigail is waiting for John to come back to her and he continues to tell her that he is never coming back and not to get her hopes
The main character, John Proctor, may seem to be a normal, middle aged man living in the Puritan town of Salem, but however, he holds a dark secret: he cheated on his wife with a girl named Abigail Williams. What he doesn 't know, is that by cheating with Abigail, he partly started the Salem witch madness; John makes Abigail very envious of his wife, and thus, she begins accusing others of dark sorcery and witchcraft. John, at first, is very reluctant to tell everyone the truth about why Abigail and other young girls are accusing his wife and other older women of being witches because he fears it will ruin his good name and reputation. However, after he realizes that the situation has truly gone out of control, he tries to confess his wrongdoing, but is only imprisoned and accused of witchcraft as well.
He chose to run like a coward. He betrayed his friend who would do anything for him and protect him. Another act of betrayal in the novel is when Sanaubar left Hassan and Ali. Sanaubar had a duty of being a mother to Hassan and a wife to Ali.
It all starts at the very beginning when they start lying about Tituba being a witch and conjuring Ruth Putnams dead sisters. And the group of girls that accuse people of witch trial are lying pretty much the whole play. One doesn’t even know if witches and wizards are real and these girls had all of Salem going crazy thinking everyone is cursed with witchcraft. They did it all to make people lower on the social ladder than they are or to get back at people who have done them wrong. It is established very early in the play that girls are liars when Abby says, “
His wife Elizabeth was accused of witchcraft by the young girls which meant that she would be arrested and most likely hanged. John Proctor had make mistakes in the past such as cheating on his wife which led him to make the ultimate sacrifice for his family and his name. John Proctor confesses to being a witch as he knows it is the only way he can save his wife Elizabeth from being arrested and killed. Proctor is seen as a tragic hero because he decides to not sign his confession as it would
Miller bases the historical accounts of the salem witch trials. He focuses on several girls and a slave dancing in the woods. They were conjuring or attempting to conjure spirits from the dead. The girls danced in the woods and named names of the men they wanted to love them. The men they named all had wives.

Everyone in Salem walked in fear that someone would accuse them of being a witch. Abigail Williams was a character in a play by Arthur Miller called The Crucible. She wasn’t just a character in Miller’s play, she was a real woman during the Salem witch trials and caused just has much trouble in her actual life as she did in the play. Abigail was extremely selfish, cruel, and possibly insane. She hurts so many people in such a short amount of time and hardly seems to care as long as she doesn’t get in trouble.
Have you ever done something you should not have due to the fact that you were afraid? Similar to how when John Proctor was under pressure he screamed out that, “God is dead!” (Miller, 198). Or lie to keep yourself from getting in trouble? Like how Tituba did to save herself from being labeled as a witch by saying she saw Sarah Good with the Devil.
Although Aristotle states that one must meet certain qualifications to be a tragic hero, like being of noble descent, Proctor does meet all of the other qualifications. Proctor meets the qualifications by sleeping with Abigail, by being accused of witchcraft, and by being highly praised in this community. To be a tragic hero his/her downfall is one's fault. Proctor decided to created his downfall when he has an affair with Reveron Hails orphaned niece, Abigail. Proctor knew what he did was wrong but his pride was too high to admit it.
