She starts accusing people that she doesn’t like of practicing witchcraft, including Elizabeth Proctor. Elizabeth Proctor is John Proctor’s wife, and Abigail doesn 't like her because she wants to be with John, who she had an affair with. Abigail thinks that by accusing Elizabeth of witchcraft Elizabeth will be killed and then she can finally be with John. During these witch trials, many other people were accused and blamed for things that they did not do. It was mostly because of Abigail and her friends were lying about innocent people doing witchcraft.
When Abby had to confess due to being caught in the woods she didn't want people to know about their affair. Abby said "She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a—" to John and the court.

What he doesn 't know, is that by cheating with Abigail, he partly started the Salem witch madness; John makes Abigail very envious of his wife, and thus, she begins accusing others of dark sorcery and witchcraft. John, at first, is very reluctant to tell everyone the truth about why Abigail and other young girls are accusing his wife and other older women of being witches because he fears it will ruin his good name and reputation. However, after he realizes that the situation has truly gone out of control, he tries to confess his wrongdoing, but is only imprisoned and accused of witchcraft as well.
Another act of betrayal in the novel is when Sanaubar left Hassan and Ali. Sanaubar had a duty of being a mother to Hassan and a wife to Ali. She not only betrayed Ali by committing adultery, but also leaving Hassan without so much as holding him because of his cleft lip. According to the text,” Sanaubar had taken one glance…barked a bitter laughter…she had refused to even hold Hassan, and just five days later, she was gone.” (Hosseini, 9). Her actions had left Hassan without a mother figure.

One doesn’t even know if witches and wizards are real and these girls had all of Salem going crazy thinking everyone is cursed with witchcraft. They did it all to make people lower on the social ladder than they are or to get back at people who have done them wrong.
