Abigail first commits adultery with Elizabeth Proctor’s husband John Proctor. Later on, she accuses people of doing witchcraft which causes their life. Abigail Williams uses the Salem Witch Trials to put out all the resentment she has towards everyone. From this broad accusation, it shows how weak the human beings really are, and how greediness and to want for personal gaining. Many people die in the village after a series of lies and unjust practices.
Elizabeth Procter was married to John Procter who supposedly had an affair with Abigail Williams. John Procter went to break things off with Abigail Williams because his wife found out about the affair and she accused Elizabeth of witchcraft hoping that Elizabeth would no longer stand in the way of their “love”. The only problem that interfered with her plan was that John didn’t feel that strongly for Abigail. He cared more deeply for his wife. Whenever John went to testify against Abigail, she accused him as well.
The play focuses on the inconsistencies of the salem witch trials and the behavior that can result from dark desires and agendas. Miller bases the historical accounts of the salem witch trials. He focuses on several girls and a slave dancing in the woods. They were conjuring or attempting to conjure spirits from the dead. The girls danced in the woods and named names of the men they wanted to love them.
By spilling all these accusations, Abigail turned Salem into a boiling pot of rumor and hatred. Even more so, it’s sad to think that Abigail did all of it simply because she wanted John back, and was angry at Elizabeth for being kicked out. On page 1157, Abigail's accusations are put on display, “I saw Goody Sibber with the Devil… I saw Goody Hawkins with the Devil… I saw Goody Booth with the Devil!”. Abigail couldn’t control her mouth, and ran around town accusing and denying to her content. Alan Kazdin talks about lying, “It is unlikely that lying will be completely eliminated, but with the right encouragement, it can be dramatically lessened”.
First, In my last Duchess the Duke killed his wife because there was not any communication and she was not faithful to the Duke. Abigail uses the situation to her advantage to rid herself of Elizabeth so that she can finally be with John, despite the him telling Abigail that they will no longer have anything together. As the trials go on, John sees with increasing horror how the citizens’ and judges’ blind faith are bringing ruin to the town in their complete belief that the girls are telling the truth, despite lack of proof. Throughout the play, the character of different citizens are put to the test as the girls increasingly accuse more and more of the townies of being in league with the devil. The Crucible explores themes of envy, infidelity, greed, resolve, and fanaticism, among others. The tale of Reverend John Hale’s actions in Salem is a clear testament to why The Crucible, the test, is an appropriate title for the play.
Power in our society nowadays is very misgiven and abused. When people have power they tend to use it for their own benefit and to manipulate people into believing them. In the play, The Crucible, Arthur Miller dramatizes the Salem witch trials of 1692 in order to show his audience how easy it was to be accused and hung for witchcraft. In the Crucible a group of young girls were caught dancing in the woods and in order to not receive a punishment they lied saying they got witched. The girls blamed many people of the town of being witches and caused conflict all over the village.
