A detached society: Utopia or Inferno? How would the world change if all people were absolutely equal in every condition. In this cutting edge short story, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., the world is finally amounting up to America’s first amendment which is enforcing that everyone is created equal. In this society, the masterful, strong, and pretty are required to wear handicaps. Thus, these restrains leave the world evenly matched, from brains to beauty. With the world constantly pushing for equality for all people, Vonnegut comes up with a world that society is ardently working toward. Vonnegut analyzes forced equality into his theme, in the society that he created, in the not so far years ahead. He creates a world where everybody that is living in it is completely equal. Vonnegut is making equality by shifting beauty, strength, and brains while battling to dealing with gender, religion, and race. He writes this story to interpret the lesson that not everyone is equal, but rather, they all have weaknesses and strengths that makes each individual unique. Further more, “Harrison tore the straps off his handicap harness like wet tissue paper, tore straps guaranteed to support five thousand pounds,” Handicaps were placed on everyone that prevented anyone and everyone from being equal. In a society without competition, there can be no getting better in any way. All of the progression that is made, is required that it is halted. Also, he expresses how Harrison’s potential refined when he is writing, “He flung away his rubber-ball nose, revealed a man that would have awed Thor, the god of thunder,” Harrison Bergeron, just like all the otherwise mandated to wear extremely heavy weights to weigh him down, and goofy glasses to make him look dumb.
