Miranda Garcia-Rodriguez Mr.Hogan Advanced English 9 10 February 2023 “The Fall of the House of Usher” ICE Paragraph In the short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allen Poe, the story represents the love story and friendship between the Narrator and Roderick Usher. To start, even though the Narrator was petrified of the mansion, he still decides to go since Roderick needed him. “Nevertheless, in this mansion of gloom I now proposed to myself a sojourn of some weeks” (Poe 2). Roderick needed someone to help him through a difficult time in his life so he reached out to the Narrator. The Narrator, who lived across the country traveled by horse to support Roderick during a difficult situation in his life and was also determined to stay as long as Roderick needed him to. …show more content…

In addition, the Narrator does everything in his power to help Roderick cope with the loss of his sister. On page six, Poe writes “For several days ensuing, her name was unmentioned by either Usher or myself; and during this period I was busied in earnest endeavors to alleviate the melancholy of my friend”. Roderick was immensely devastated after his sister’s death. This provoked the Narrator to feel sorrow for his friend. He read and painted with his friend to get his mind off his sister’s passing, which is what a friend would do. The Narrator tried his hardest to make sure that Roderick wasn’t under the weather anymore. The Narrator cared so much for his friend that he stayed with Roderick because he knew that the lady Madeline’s death was going to cause Roderick to go insane. This proves my point about “The Fall of the House of Usher'' being a love story because the Narrator shows how much he cares about his friend. Lastly, Roderick’s presence makes the Narrator feel safe. “His air appalled me-but anything was preferable to the solitude which I had so long endured, and I even welcomed his presence as a relief” (Poe 11). The Narrator feels safe when Roderick is around.
