Most of the characters have direct ties to power, whether it is physical, social, economic, or intellectual. But the author balances their powers with flaws. Lennie, a main character, has a lot of physical power. Yet due to his mental disability, he does not understand the consequences of his actions. Because of this, he cannot control his strength. His lack of empathy results in unintentional damage to those around him. Compared to other characters, Lennie is not as high up on the social ladder. Curley’s wife, Crooks, and Lennie all have learned to live with discrimination, but they still long to someday be accepted.

In our society, people are told what to be and what to do with their disability, but one should have the choice to carve their pathway to success. John Steinbeck was born at the beginning of the twentieth century and experienced the turning point of many eras that are evidenced throughout his writings. Steinbeck lived through the strong economic years during World War I, the dirt poor years of the Great Depression, and even saw the beginnings of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s; all of his dreams for these decades are evidenced in his works, more specifically, Of Mice and Men. Of Mice and Men is set in the 1920’s in the Salinas Valley of California. Other writers, such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, char-acterize the 1920’s as a fun decade with a booming economy filled with men rising from rags to riches, but Steinbeck shows how life was for men

The novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, is a story about two men and their companionship. The story takes place in California during the Great Depression. The two men have a dream to one day own a farm of their own. This dream never comes true and they are forced to work for someone else on a ranch for the rest of their lives. On of the main characters, Lennie, is retarded and often gets him and George into trouble. In the story, the author gives many clues that allude to the fact that Lennie has a mental illness. Throughout the story, he says and does things that shows the reader of this. The ways Lennie is shown as retarded is through his childish manner, his memory loss, his incapability to control his strength, and his cowardness.

Throughout the centuries the growth in special needs children and adults have increased dramatically. Although there isn’t many statistics nor many records of how many special needs people there were in the early 1930’s it’s still apparent that they were there. The book “Of Mice And Men” written by John Steinbeck he uses the characters Lennie, who appears to be special needs, and George, Lennie’s caretaker, to show the contrast between the two mental capacities and the role of dependency on another. In Steinbeck’s “Of Mice And Men” the character Lennie Smalls shows that the actions and consequences differ from people who have special needs or mental disorders from those who don’t.

The book Of Mice and Men is full of puzzling examples of the human condition, from Lennie and his mental disability to Curley only caring about his social appearance. With characters like these two, the book exploits the human condition that concerns circumstances life has given you. John Steinbeck brings to life what being a laborer in the American depression meant to the men and one woman who had enough personality to stand out. Steinbeck shows the human condition of men while they survive in the American depression.

It is all quiet in the bunk house. Carlson is continuing to plead with Candy to let him to kill his dog. Candy does not want to allow it but, he does not feel he can deny Carlson. Candy looks to someone for guidance. Someone powerful in the bunkhouse; Someone named Slim. Candy needs the okay from the powerful one to stop Carlson 's request. This and every other event in the book is controlled by the powerful people. Power and the absence of power shape the relationships and steer the course of events in Of Mice and Men.

Anyway, this research will focus only on three aspects - conscience crisis, violence, and fate and destiny. The ability to own your own land is the main dream held by four of the characters in the book. The idea of owning your own land is a simile for a life of happiness. There are two other unattainable dreams which are held by Curley's wife, and Crooks. Curley's wife once had an offer to become an actress in Hollywood, however the person never bequeathed the job to her. She later would go on to marrying a man named Curly who she currently regrets marring. Crooks, who is an African American man who is also crippled, just want to be able to have control over his life. However Crooks has unchangeable barriers in his path for control. All five of these characters have a hope for a new life which evidently turns to nothing due to obstacles. This book takes place on a farm in California.
