Love is a curse and a blessing to mankind. Jay Gatsby, formally known as James Gatz, lives in West Egg, a part of Long Island full of new-wealth people. He gained his wealth from his dark, criminal background and his family’s inheritance money from their passing. Gatsby holds impressive parties, free of invitation, where most celebrities and other wealthy people go to enjoy themselves. He meets Nick Carraway, a young bondman from the Midwest, at one of his parties and they quickly bond. Gatsby’s been in love with Daisy Buchanan, who happens to be Nick’s cousin, since they met in Louisville when he was stationed there during his involvement in the military. He has not seen her in over five years, but his love for her has never gone away. When …show more content…
Gatsby has been lying to everyone around him about his background from a very young age. Tom decides to do an investigation and finds out “[Gatsby] and this Wolfsheim bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores… and sold grain alcohol over the counter” (Fitzgerald 133). Gatsby’s wealth is from a bootlegging business, which Wolfsheim, a famous con man, dragged him into. Gatsby became a criminal in order to keep up with his popularity because of his fake persona. He has told countless individuals his family had passed away and he inherited all their wealth, but his father, Henry Gatz, shows up at his funeral (Fitzgerald 65-167). Gatsby’s father was assumed dead because Gatsby told everyone he had passed away when he was young. Gatsby’s past has haunted him his whole life, his family history including; the best way for him to escape it was to lie by creating a picture-perfect life for himself. Since people are oblivious to his personal history, he is very popular, making his parties a bigger hit. Wolfsheim told Nick Carraway “[Gatsby] went to Oggsford College in England” (Fitzgerald 72). Gatsby’s education seemed to be the root cause of how his wealth flourished, but it was made up, like the rest of his life. Gatsby’s image is very important to him and education is what makes or breaks people within the 1900s. Education is highly respected within society, and Gatsby craves …show more content…
Gatsby tries to get Daisy to admit that she never loved Tom, but she cries out “‘[she] did love [Tom] once, but [she] loved [Gatsby] too’” (Fitzgerald 132). Gatsby has no care for how Daisy feels about leaving her husband because he will do anything to be with her, proving he does not actually love Daisy, just the idea of her. Gatsby craves what he cannot have, which Daisy is one of those cravings. He does not realize the mess he has created with forcing Daisy to admit things she does not believe because Gatsby is consumed by his love for her. Gatsby is very protective of Daisy and when he found out the police were going to investigate the murder of Myrtle Wilson, he refused to leave until he knew Daisy was not blamed (Fitzgerald 148). Daisy’s safety is a major priority of Gatsby’s, making him neglect his own needs. Gatsby’s future could be life-long imprisonment, but he is so focused on keeping Daisy safe that he is oblivious to the possible consequences that could occur. His life and personal goals should be his top priority, but his focus is on Daisy’s, even though she would not do the same for him. When Gatsby moved to West Egg, he hosted parties everyday because “‘he half-expected her to wander into one’” (Fitzgerald 78). Gatsby was never a flashy man, he would prefer to keep to himself and have a simple life, but his love for Daisy destroyed that. His grand parties
The short quote stated above is a flat out obvious lie as it is furthermore concluded in the novel that Gatsby did not inherit any money from his parents what so ever, but through bootlegging, an illegal process of smuggling alcohol into establishments. As the story goes on, Gatsby’s true identity gets exposed as it is announced when Nick Carraway says, “James Gatz-that was really or at least legally, his name. He has changed it at the age of seventeen. His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people.” (102 Fitzgerald).
“when he looked around him now for the first time and saw the height and splendor of the hall and the great rooms opening out from it into other rooms his grief began to be mixed with an awed pride”. This shows that even though Gatsby’s father was poor, he was still materialistic. His son had just been killed, and he allowed the material items and money that his son had, to distract him from the grief that he should have been experiencing over the loss of his son.
Gatsby claims his “‘wife doesn’t love [him]...she never loved [him].’” Tom does not believe Gatsby and confidently denies his claim. Tom is sure that Daisy loves him just as much as the day she married him. Gatsby tells Daisy to confirm that she does not love Tom, but she hesitates in her admittance, revealing that she does love Tom. Gatsby was so blinded by his idealistic illusion that he could not accept the possibility that Daisy also loves Tom.
When that all was said he was nervous that people would know the truth. In the 1920s school was for the rich and especially going to a university, the more education you had the more successful you could be. Since the Gatsby family was poor and just farmers it was hard for him to get in without a scholarship.
During the whole book love is a prominent motif, characters do many odd and extravagant things for love throughout the book. Gatsby goes the farthest for love, he dedicated his whole life to get back together with Daisy even though she has a husband and a daughter. In chapter 4 Nick and Jordan were together and they discuss Gatsby 's house in relation to Daisy 's, he says: "It was a strange coincidence," I said. ‘But it wasn 't a coincidence at all.’ ’Why not?’ ’
From Gatsby’s childhood schedule, Fitzgerald establishes that Gatsby was going to make it far in life. It is when he comes across Daisy (who Fitzgerald characterizes as a siren by her “voice that men who had cared for her found difficult to forget” (9).) that his life begins to follow a path of obsession. Even though Gatsby and Myrtle both chased after people who represented their temptations (Daisy as an unobtainable first love and Tom as status and wealth), only Gatsby is regarded as good when Nick mentions that “Gatsby turned out all right at the end…” (2). The reason for this could be found near the end of the book when Gatsby tells the gardener to delay draining the pool, stating that “‘I’ve never used that pool all summer’” (153).
In the novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the protagonist, Jay Gatsby, pursues his love interest, Daisy Buchanan. Although Gatsby glorifies Daisy, in truth, she is careless. This misconception of Daisy results in disaster, as Gatsby’s obsession to win her affection leaves him emotionally unstable and spoils his reputation. Throughout the novel, Gatsby idealizes Daisy, thinking extremely highly of her, which is evident in his expectations of her. In reality however, Daisy is far from the perfect character Gatsby conceptualizes; on the contrary, she is extraordinarily disingenuous and materialistic.
Gatsby has a lot of money, but the money he makes is from illegal business deals with Wolfsheim “ He and this Wolfsheim bought up a lot of
Sicne the whole point of beign at the house that day was for daisy to say that she never loved Tom, so that she and Gatsby could be together. Except that did not happen for Daisy got scared and went with Gatsby into New York. Gatsby only ever cared about Daisy and that she is exactly what he wants in a partner, he is blind to her avoiding every little thing that requires her to own up to something. Gatsby is working
The Great Gatsby is a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald about early America in the 1920s. This was just the third novel that Fitzgerald wrote. (“F. Scott Fitzgerald.”) The book highlighted a lot of the things that were going on in that time like the illegal production of alcohol due to the outlaw of alcohol known as prohibition. The book also talks about the societal normality of people having affairs.
“She's manipulative and cruel but hides it behind her whimsical stare. Gatsby never had a chance. On top of using Gatsby for her own enjoyment, she ends up going back to Tom. After he had openly cheated on her” (Tanner). Gatsby still had feelings for Daisy and she still liked him.
When Gatsby is screaming at Tom he is saying that Daisy had never loved Tom while they were married and that she had only loved him. Gatsby speaks in desperation. Gatsby telling himself that Daisy never loved Tom. This means he can continue to believe that Daisy will forever be his. He convinces himself that Daisy will leave Tom and run back to the life that they once knew.
When he got close to Daisy again he wanted her to tell her now husband Tom Buchanan, who constantly cheated on her, that she had never loved him because he was convinced that she didn't. During the commotion that is happening, he says ¨ and what's more, I love Daisy too. Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time¨ (Buchanan 131), which causes Daisy to stay with Tom and leave Gatsby, making him never get the love of his life.
Fitzgerald makes it apparent throughout the novel that Gatsby does everything in hopes to compete against Tom and impress Daisy. For example, Gatsby throws lavish parties every weekend with the hope that Daisy will stumble in, and then they will be reunited and return to their old ways. Additionally, when Gatsby moves to the West Egg, he purposefully purchases an extravagant mansion near the Buchanan’s mansion where he can view their emerald light on his dock. Throughout the duration of The Great Gatsby, Gatsby noticeably envies Tom Buchanan, Daisy’s husband, for seizing the life that Gatsby was not able to achieve. Gatsby longs to return to the passionate relationship they had five years prior and maybe even create a family similar to the family Daisy has with Tom.
Throughout the book Gatsby’s life is a mystery. Not just to the readers but to the world and people of the novel. Eventually Gatsby reveals his rise from poverty to greatness to Nick. It’s revealed that Gatsby grew up almost dirt poor.
