Continuously throughout the play greed is a main cause of persecution. Putnam is a wealthy man with much land but wants more. George Jacobs happens to have a lot of land that Putnam wants, using his daughter Putnam gets Jacobs accused of witch craft and put to death. Jacobs death results in Putnam being able to buy his land. Giles knows the truth behind Jacobs being accused, he makes that clear when he exclaims “If Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeits his property – that’s law!
“Greed makes men blind and foolish, and makes him an easy prey”- Unknown. Greed, is one word that comes to mind when I think of Thomas Putnam. He is a flank character who stays a bad guy throughout the play which adds to how he portrays the theme. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Thomas Putnam helps to show the theme of how far someone will go to make sure they get what they want. He does this in many different ways and he does it very well.

The author describes Tom as a miserly meagre man. Tom lacks quality and his greediness makes him even less valuable. Another example of Tom’s greediness is when the narrator states, “He built himself, as usual, a vast house, out of ostentation, but left the greater part of it unfinished and unfurnished out of parsimony.” (Irving online). Tom is so greedy that he builds a grand house but decides not to finish the rest of the house because he does not want to spend any more money.

Both were written in different time periods, where certain events and happenings influenced each of the stories and their conflicts. Washington Irving wrote “The Devil and Tom Walker” during a time of economic boom (1824). Stephen Vincent Benet wrote “The Devil and Daniel Webster” during a time of economic depression (1937). Despite the stories’ titles, both have different resolutions, depictions of the devil, and saving graces in the end.
In the short story titled The Devil And Tom Walker,Washington Irving explains that no matter how hard life is going to never sell our soul. For instance, Tom wanted to save his wife but in ordinary to save her Tom had to sell his soul. Irving’s asserts that walker had to sell his store to save his wife from dying. People will always be greedy and think they are smarter than others but this is untrue. The one who thinks he is smarter or better than the other will always end up losing in life.
