Loneliness can hurt anyone and make their life feel as if it has no meaning.Throughout the story, Of Mice and Men, the theme of loneliness and isolation has been developed by many different characters, and is one of the most present themes in the story. Some of these characters who show this theme are Crooks, a crippled black worker who is discriminated against, Candy, an old man who is only accompanied by his dog, and Curley’s wife, who is locked away in her house. All of these characters are some of the many examples of loneliness and isolation. Candy, an old man with a broken hand and a man’s best friend. Candy lives in the ranch bunk house with the rest of the workers which means that he lives with all of the other workers along with his dog. Candy and his dog are both old and are on death's doorstep, many of the other bunkmates know this and are sick of the dog, complaining of the smell it gives off. They convince Candy that the dog is suffering and is begging to be put …show more content…
Curley’s wife is always told by Curley to stay in the house but Curley’s wife never listens, and always pushes herself on to others, making them targets to Curley. Curley’s wife means no harm, she is like a bird trapped in a bird cage longing to be let free. Curley’s wife is so lonely she eventually tries to befriend Lenny by letting him touch her hair, but ends up dead. In the text it says, ““I get lonely,” she said. “You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How’d you like not to talk to anybody?””. This shows Curley’s wife's loneliness and her desire for human interaction with someone other than her husband. If Curley never put so much pressure on his wife to stay in the house and was nicer to her, she probably wouldn’t have been so lonely, and wouldn’t have ended up
As the only women on the ranch, this causes Curley's wife to be the minority to all of the men on the farm. This causes her to become very lonely and isolated since she is the only women. In the texts Curley's wife says, “‘I get lonely,’... ‘You can talk to people, but I can't talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad, ‘How’d you like not to talk to anybody?’”
Because Curley’s wife is closely connected to the boss, her engagements towards the men on the ranch will only push her further away from them. Also, when Curley’s wife appears, her loneliness pours out of her with resentment. She describes her isolation at the ranch by stating, “I get lonely...you can talk to people, but I can't talk to nobody but Curley” (87). This shows that shes just a lonely young and naive girl, who uses her sexuality to get noticed on the
What Curley’s wife says in this quote further exemplifies how she is misunderstood and simply lonely. She is not trying to cause trouble by talking to other people and is just trying to interact with other men since she feels lonely and not because she wants to flirt with them. In addition to her isolation, the conflict between her wanting to live a desirable life and her inability to do such, is evident in the novel as she expresses her dissatisfaction with her life with Lennie and talks about her failed dreams and aspirations to become an actress, saying “"Well, I ain't told this to nobody before. Maybe I ought'n to. I don'like Curley.
In Of Mice and Men Curley’s wife is hated throughout the book but near the end she reveals her past to unattentive Lennie. “Ain’t I got a right to talk to nobody? Whatta they think I am , anyways?”(pg.87), quote shows that Curley's wife is lonely and wants to talk to someone but she is ignored by all. She goes to explain to Lennie all the things that has happened to her “If I’d went, I wouldn’t be livin’ like this you bet...
Curley wants his wife to be constantly monitored but also isolated. When Curley’s wife explains her isolation to Lennie, she makes him question how it would feel for him to be in her situation, “I get lonely , she said. “You can talk to people, but I can't talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How’d you like to not talk to anyone.”
When George and Lennie leave the room Candy is once again alone and the text reveals that “The old man got to his feet and looked after them, His voice was shaking”(Steinbeck 59). Candy’s emptiness is revealed because of how he relies on George and Lennie and when they leave he is filled with nothing but sadness. George and Lennie’s companionship fills this space that was left empty when his dog was killed by Carlson. Thus, all Candy needs to fulfill his emptiness is a companion like George and Lennie as he tells
The 3 characters that express the theme of loneliness in the novella are Curley’s wife, Crooks, and Candy. Have you ever thought loneliness could lead to isolation? John Steinback writes in The book Mice Of Men Themes that focus mostly on isolation and loneliness because in his book it focuses on the time when the stock market crashed and during that time people had to find jobs and make money and it was hard. So it makes a lot of sense why the theme of loneliness and isolation is in this book.
Curley's wife symbolizes the loneliness and isolation that the characters experience. Curley's wife is described as a "tart" and a "troublemaker" because of the trouble she caused for Lennie. "Think I don't like to talk to somebody ever' once in a while? Think I like to stay in the house alla time?"(Steinbeck 78) symbolizes her loneliness. Also tells us that this is not a place for a woman because she is stuck in the house all of the time.
Loneliness is a feeling that every person feels and to combat the feeling of being lonely people turn towards companionship. The novel, "Of Mice and Men," conveys the story of loneliness in many different ways. Steinbeck constructs the theme of loneliness throughout the story “Of Mice and Men” by showing how Crooks is made to live by himself in the barn, Curley’s wife has no one to talk to, and without Lennie around George would be by himself. What keeps people together is the desire for companionship and not to be alone in this world. Crooks is an African-American stable buck that is physically and socially isolated on the ranch.
In this essay, my topics will be about the friendship these two characters share, and the loneliness these characters feel during this time. In Of Mice and Men they use crooks, candy, and curleys wife to develop the theme loneliness by bringing up how they have no friends or family. When Curleys wife came into the cabin, The guys say that shes trying to flirt with them. “The girl flared up.
Curley’s wife is one of the most alienated characters in the novel Of Mice and Men, if not the most alienated and isolated character as it is displayed through her being nameless, being very flirtatious, and the perception of her by the men on the ranch. Indeed, the author constantly is showing that how regardless if you are amongst people or have company, but however there is no sensation of love what so ever, it is just as equal to living a life through despair and desolation. Whenever Curley’s wife appears in the book she is either looking for her husband or other company to converse with, however it has a reverse notation and it pours out of her in resentment and disillusion as she states, “Why can’t I talk to you?I never get to talk to
Curley’s wife responds with, “Aw, nuts! What kinda harm am I doin’ to you? Seems like they ain’t none of them cares how I gotta live… I don’ like Curley. He ain’t a nice fella… Coulda been in the movies, an’ had nice clothes…”
On the other hand Curley’s wife is always desiring attention due to her isolation: “I get lonely… How’d you like not to talk to anybody”(Steinbeck 87). This is one of the many times Curley’s wife has tried to talk to someone. She has tried to have a conversation with Lennie before but George tells him not to talk to her. Lennie could not resist and talked to her. Her constant desire for attention ultimately leads to her death.
Curley’s Wife says “Why can't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely.” Usually she seems like a strong person, but when she says this, it exposes a more vulnerable and dependent side of her. Generally a married couple gets along pretty well, but it is different with Curley and his wife.
I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely” (Curley’s Wife Page 86). Curley’s wife was often trying to talk to the men, but none of them would talk to her because she was Curley’s wife and they wanted no trouble. Curley’s wife had no friends on the ranch, no one for her to sit down and talk with. Curley’s wife wasn’t in love with Curley, but he had a home and money.
