No one will ever forget the Baltimore riots. Freddie Gray, the young man killed by Baltimore police, became the symbol for the brutality facing young Black men. As a young Black man, it was hard for me to stay off of social media during these incidents. The riots raged on and many non-Blacks sought to remind our population of what we’re not allowed to do. Many social media posts focused on the March on Washington, Selma, and peaceful sit-ins, and captioned their posts with the statement: “Why can’t Blacks be peaceful like the Civil Rights Movement.”
The civil rights movement was a movement that was started to go against segregation. During the civil rights movement there was multiple marches, protest, and many other things that individual or groups of people did to try and get equal rights for African Americans. One of the types of protest is called a sit-in. The sit-ins were mainly started by 4 african american students at a Greensboro lunch counter. At first the four students just wanted some lunch but when they went to go order they refused to serve them. This resulted in the 4 students protesting and sitting at the lunch counter until they were served which turned out to be a little over 5 months. Once other people found out about this many other african americans and even some whites joined. Eventually they had to serve them because it was slowing down their business and they were losing a huge amount of money. The african americans were able to get served and broke some of the segregation laws in other restaurants, stores, etc.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy delivered his “Civil Rights Address” on June 11, 1963 to talk about how everyone is born equal and just because you are born with darker skin you shouldn’t be considered less of a person and have less rights. It was filmed in the oval office and broadcast on national radio and television. This speech is about equal rights for african americans. It was made because two black children had to be escorted to school by state troopers after numerous threats. John F.
