Martin Luther King Junior’s “I Have a Dream” speech ignited a spark for change in the United States’s civil rights movement. King Jr. was a Baptist minister and a civil rights activist during the 1950’s and 60’s. According to Dan Schowalter, a professor at Rowan University, King gave this speech in 1963 during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. This March consisted of 200,000 individuals in Washington D.C. who fought for racial equality in society ( He gave this speech because he was dedicated to his opinions on the rights blacks should have, he believed that everyone should have the same rights that whites had. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, there was prejudice against blacks in many different aspects of everyday life.
