For as long as we have lived, our nation has developed an ideology that we were created to seek revenge and retaliate to those who have wronged us. Although, the act of revenge is not the solution to our problems, we still desire to inflict torment on each and every individual that we feel deserves it. However, this is not the only problem that we face today, America is a multicultural place where people believe in different practices and become prejudice to the diverse religions. In the book, “Strength to Love” written by Martin Luther King Jr., the American religious experience is in the strength to forgive and love one another. As a whole we must be open-minded and accept the differences in cultures we are exposed to with a tough mind and a tender heart. Throughout this beautiful piece, King shows the people his optimistic beliefs on spreading warmth and eliminating the evil that blinds our world. We must spread love. King states that there are two steps in loving one’s enemy. The first step is forgiveness and most importantly, the second is being able to see the good in the individual that has done wrong. There is ill in the good and there is graciousness in the bad. The hardest part is being able to recognize the kindness in an enemy. Once we acknowledge the ignorance and misunderstanding, we realize our enemy is not so bad and we are no longer in capable of hating them. “...Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you…” (Matthew 5:45-45, pg 47). Although it seems as if this task makes you a coward or is impossible to achieve, it actually builds your character and makes you a stronger individual.
