After the War of 1812 people were interested in the settlement of the west, which had been enlarged by the Louisiana purchase. The Louisiana purchase cost the United States $15 Million. The Native Americans were removed from their lands during this era of the Westward Expansion. The Native Americans were forced onto reserves. The homestead act provided free land to many people who wanted to move westward. Most of the pioneers who settled the west became cash croppers. The South wanted to expand slavery into the North during the westward expansion but the North did not want slavery to be legal. The Gold Rush brought even more people to the west.
