During the 1600s, middle class families didn’t even exists, people where either wealthy with great privileges or living in poverty. Once the 1700s came around is when the impact of middle class became enormous for families. Around this time women and men got married, but it was not because they were in love, Instead, they would married one another because of financial or social reasons. Women who considered themselves as wealthy refused to marry a man of a lower class and as did the men. If a man did make such a decision to wed a women in poverty that would be talked about in a negative way and rumors would go around.
The upper class initially benefited from the institutions (pools, theatres, and education)The wealthy members of society did not wish to live in cramped quarters any longer. The conditions were filthy and not living up to their modern expectations. They finally received what they deserved when they started moving to lavish homes outside the cities while the poor plebeians stayed in the cramped cities. The wealthy members could afford the new housing after Hausmann’s reforms. This included enlarging the streets, an expanded and cleaner sewer system, public parks, and pools.
The lower class wanted this to change, and after the revolution had taken its course no only did America's government change but their society changed. Wood says that “one class did not overthrow another”, but that social relationships changed. The Gilded Age was an age of rapid economic growth. Railroads, factories, and mines were slowly popping up across the country, creating a variety of new opportunities for entrepreneurs and laborers alike. These new inventions and opportunities created “...an unprecedented accumulation of wealth” (GML, 601). But the transition of America from a small farming based nation to a powerful industrial one created a huge rift between social classes. Most people were either filthy rich or dirt poor, with workers being the latter.

His article highlights the unequal divide that has persisted over the course of history and will continue to manifest in the future. Social class played a key role in the Elizabethan Age; without social hierarchy society would have fallen apart, the people did not know of anything else other than the role of classes. Each class had different situations of life, some were wealthy and had nice homes while others were poor and living off of the streets. The class rankings were given to each individual by situations such as birth, fame, wealth, and known skills(“Elizabethan Era.”). One could only move up a class by the Queen's approval, obtaining sudden wealth, going into debt, losing your job, and many other specific conditions(“Elizabethan Era - The Lost Colony.”). For instance, marriage between two people from separate classes could alter social class and was often frowned upon.
Prior to the Civil War the antebellum South was structured by a class system. The particular class system used by the south was a structure of social rankings. Typically, this system was dependent on how much land, as well as slaves one owned. Then based off of those requirements there were then six specific classes that one would fall into.
Shirley Chisholm once said “The emotional, sexual and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says, “It’s a girl”. “The Yellow Wallpaper”, written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, depicts the social norm in the 19th century when women were thought of as lower intellectual beings who had “hysterical tendencies” and therefore not capable of making good decisions for themselves. This story lets readers into the life of a woman during the 1800’s who is treated like a small child with no say to her own mental health , even by her own husband. The 1800’s were a period in time when women were expected to play the roles of wives and mothers and nothing more.
Our Society has placed us based on our religion, race, and background. Social classes have been a major factor during the 1960s. During the year of 1960, many black and poor were not treated equally and categorized into groups due to their religion and skin color. In the novella To Kill a Mockingbird the author Harper Lee shows the theme that social classes are created through your race and your occupation through the Ewells and the Cunninghams. The Ewells are seen as the lowest among the whites in Maycomb, they have very little money and no education.
I believe social classes have defined our society in many ways. In America, they separate people into three different classes: the upper class, middle class, and the lower or working class. Based on wealth and various occupations, social classes determine the population’s status in society. Social classes today define individuals and influence their actions. Although people born in a certain class may choose to stay there, they also have the choice of leaving.

Social classes are a form of social stratification that refers to the existence of structured inequalities between individuals and groups in society. A social class is a group of people of comparable status, power and wealth which are usually classified as upper class, middle class, and lower class. For each class, there are some specific opportunities available that influence their social life. We can understand about the particularity of the chances through unequal distribution of these opportunities between individuals in social classes. In here belonging to a social class seems to be an obstacle for some individuals to obtain equal opportunity, unlike upper class people.
