I believe that paragraphs 9 and 12 from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” are the strongest paragraphs in this letter of his. These paragraph is so profound and truly explain why segregation is unjust in two short paragraphs. They don’t go into a lot of detail on why segregation is unjust, because they don’t need to. They’re argument is strong enough with how short they are. Since these paragraphs give an easy to understand and short reasoning as to why segregation is unjust, explains what makes a law just or unjust, and show that just laws can be unjust when applied to situations such as segregation, I believe they are the strongest paragraphs in this letter.

In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. led a peaceful movement in Birmingham, Alabama. The purpose of the demonstration was to bring awareness and end to racial disparity in Birmingham. Later that night, King and his followers were detained by city authorities. While in custody, King wrote the famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” This letter voiced out his disappointment in the criticisms, and oppositions that the general public and clergy peers obtained. He as well emphasizes the importance of the demonstration in moral and historical grounds.
From a young age, people are told to be kind to others, no matter what they look like. Some, white people, though believed that they were superior to the African Americans so they did not have to be kind to them. This is when the issue of inequality between different races arose and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. took action. Dr. King was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 through 1968. He wrote the famous, “I Have a Dream” speech and the “Letter From Birmingham Jail”. Dr. King stood in front of many people and gave his speech, which was created to strike the people’s emotions of how African Americans suffered and why they wanted a change. In contrast, the letter was created to show the reasoning behind wanting a change, because he was writing to his fellow clergymen who said his actions were unwise and untimely. In Dr. King’s speech and letter, he uses rhetorical appeals many times to compel the feelings and reasoning behind the civil rights movement.
In the “Letter From Birmingham Jail” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr addresses seven clergymen about a letter they wrote about King and his demonstrations with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. King addresses these clergymen in a professional manner, but he also states the reasons why he and the rest of the protesters are protesting. Even though people have different views of the world, everyone has the same hopes and dreams for their country to be perfect.
For example, King says, “We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God given rights” (2). King draws sympathy for his cause from the reader who sees the unjustness of the situation he and his followers are dealing with. No one should be restricted from rights and opportunities that others are given for that long. He also mentions emotional situations the readers probably can’t even imagine. For example, he writes “vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will, drown your sisters and brothers and hated filled policemen even kill your brothers and sisters” (3). A comment like this doesn’t leave the reader unmoved. He then goes on to reveal some of his more personal feelings. King demonstates this by saying, “In deep disappointment, I have wept over the laxity of the church. But be assured that my tears have been tears of love” (8). Kings letter is a response to those in the church who have critizied him, Yet, instead of apologizing, he stands strong for his cause and turns it around on them stating his own critisim. He is disappointed in te church and his disappointment is worse because he feels so strongly for the church, as is evident through his tears. Though disappointed, King still loves the church. The text reads, “All segregation statutes are unjust because segregation distorts the soul and damages the personality” (King, page 7). One can see from this that the use of pathos persuades the readers opinion in the matter in that pathos allows a writing to appeal to your emotions in evoking an emotional response. King was very knowledgeable about laws and his right as a human. King stated laws in his letter to the clergymen, which displayed his credibility. He did not only state laws, he also stated just and unjust laws. King stated, “How can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others?” (Paragraph 4). This drew the clergymen’s attention to King’s beliefs and possibly made them realize the flaws in the system. King also states, “A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law…” (Paragraph 5). King stating their wrong doings, helped prove his point about just and unjust laws and about his wrongful jailing for taking a peaceful stand.
King starts this by adding to his letter by challenging the claim that their actions “must be condemned because they precipitate violence” (5).King displays that the statement blames the demonstrators, which he condemns illogical due to lack of valid support. He then productively demonstrates juxtaposition and compares this claim to “condemning a robbed man because his possession of money precipitated the evil act of robbery”, or “condemning Socrates because his unswerving commitment to truth and his philosophical inquiries precipitated the act by the misguided populace in which they made him drink hemlock”, or even “condemning Jesus because his unique God consciousness and never ceasing devotion to God’s will precipitated the evil act of crucification” (6). Providing these concrete ideas, King leaves his listeners no room for questioning his validity with his statements. He leaves the clergymen with a solid idea of what his mission for Civil Right is. He feels that they should have the right to their peaceful protests. He describes the officers’ actions as “ Ugly and inhumane” (paragraph 2, King) because of the hatred they have for the Negro people. King simply does not understand how his fellow brothers of the church could praise these officers’. By using these words to describe the officers, he is trying to depict how people actually treat him and his people. He’s showing them that what they’re praising is wrong. King just wants to see the “immoral end of flagrant racial injustice” (paragraph 3, King) he has stated this often throughout his whole letter to his fellow clergymen. I feel that he states this as kind of a statement that he will not stop till eventually they are free of racial injustice. Throughout his letter he uses a lot of different word choice, some of this helps him create imagery to explain more in depth. He uses his imagery to compel the reader into listening. Some examples of his imagery would be when he stated: “Before the pen of Thomas Jefferson etched across the pages of history…we were here” (paragraph 1, King) He is essentially stating that they were here even before we ourselves had freedom, and that they should have the same
