The Greek language began with the alphabet. According to Simon Price and Peter Thonemann, the Greeks were the first civilization to use the alphabet. The Greek alphabet influenced our language in many ways. For example, “alphabet” is from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet “alpha” and “beta”. Also, many letters of our modern day alphabet originate from the Greek alphabet such as the letters A,B,E, and O. The Greek alphabet evolved over several centuries, and by the 5th century BC, it used 24 letters - 17 consonants, and 7 vowels.
Sometimes you might hear some people call a gang a set but it means all the same. The group claims its own turf or property. Gangs promise to provide physical protection. Gangs creates fear in the atmosphere so that they can recruit members ("What is a gang?"). Gang members engage in criminal activities using multiple counts of violence.
These acts of violence also served to create fear amongst the government and the people as well. As they carried these violent acts out, they emitted a clear message: stopping them from pursuing their drug trade would result in death. The cartels pinpointed their violence in order to accomplish these tasks. The violence they carried out was strategic, so that it could help their ability to continue in the drug trade. The cartel’s collective organization and leadership shaped their violence into a focused manner, allowing them to fight agendas that would hurt the drug
Words and their meanings have been known to change drastically over time; especially words that are seemingly simple enough. Tattoos have become a generally common and accepted art form and business. They have a long presence in many human cultures but the origin of the word itself has a surprising history. Using other’s research, unstructured interviewing and observation I explored the history, modern relevance and reasoning behind tattoos, in and out of the Western culture. Little do most people know, tattoos have existed before have existed since BC eras, but my research shows the words had we know it can be traced back to 17th century Dutch and 18th century Tahiti (1).
Since ancient times, the Aegean Sea has been a centerpiece for much rich cultural influence. This influence is seen in our architecture, exotic foods, old pottery, myths, and other things that have lasting effects on us. This fabulous place of mystery and wonder is what gives us most of our picture of Greece, Crete, and other surrounding islands: crystal clear, sparkling water around beautiful islands with lush green landscapes and ruins of old. In this project, I have delved into this and have come back with knowledge and connections of how Greece became the true birthplace of the West. Smaller islands, such as Santorini and Patmos, have been quiet in modern times but active in eras previous.
People in society have marked their bodies with tattoos for thousands of years now. Tattooing has been a form of expression and many refer to it as a freedom of speech from the First Amendment. The utilization of these tattoos has often been as a form to express their spiritual beliefs, honor loved ones, creating a fashion statement, and to identify themselves. “It is estimated that in the United States, the number of people in the general population with tattoos range from 7 to 20 million” (Palermo, 2011, p. 507). Physical appearance and societies opinion varies widely depending on its presentation.

Seppuku was the act of the suicide by cutting the abdomen open of the warrior; it was believed that through this process the samurai’s spirit would be released to the afterlife. “Samurai warriors, served to protect the lives and property of the daimyo, large landowners, and vassals of the Shogun” (Szczepanski) both of these groups committed seppuku for various reasons that evolved around honor. The Samurai would seek seppuku when shame was brought upon him during battle, committing a dishonest act, or losing the aid of a daimyo or leader. As for the daimyo, the head shogun could ask them to perform seppuku as part of a “judicial punishment.”

From the beginning of Africana Studies, my mind and eyes were exposed to different ideas and viewpoints. Connections were made that I had never considered before and the harsh realities of life were placed directly in front of me. All the while breaking down perceptions of my own I entered the course with. I had always thought of camouflage as something worn by either the military or those that hunted. It was a pattern used to serve a purpose with a utilitarian aspect.
