People tend to create a first opinion of something depending on how it looks like. In “The Dog of Caucomgomoc” by Boardman Hawes, people start to create fake myths about this dog after the death of his master, all of this because of his scary appearance. Only Gordon Low, the man who saw how this dog took care of his owner, knows his real personality, and finally will show the world they were wrong. Through the reactions of the afraid dog to the inhabitants, "The Wild Dog of Caucomgomoc" explores how fear can show a wrong facet of a person making others judge by first appearances.

Chris McCandless story truly begins when he enters the wild. In my opinion the novel grapples with how to provide oneself with true self fulfillment. Chris enters the wild to find himself and his own inner happiness and place in the world surrounding him. He does this by isolating himself from society and loved ones. In the novel a central theme is finding your true self through adventure and hardship. In chapters four, seven, and eight the author introduces epigraphs throughout each chapter to highlight what Chris is trying to accomplish.

Risks are a possibility of loss or injury; all humans at least once in their lifetime have to do something risky. If life has no risks, you’re not really living it, since we humans do not grow as a species (or society) if there is no challenge in life. People in this world must have challenge and struggle to overcome an obstacle in their life to discover the real world. This way a person will grow physically and most importantly, mentally, to never do something adventurous or take the easy way out is on them. Krakauer, Emerson and Thoreau all have their own ideas on risk, but they all have in common is that risk can change a person for the good or bad.

Character is the thing that defines a person. What you will do, what you will say, how you interact with the world. Admittedly, all of us have character. But, the character of Christopher is a very interesting and a complex one. In times, it feels as if he is an alien compared to everyone else. On the contrary, he also deals with problems and issues that are felt by every human on the planet, allowing the reader to feel empathy for him. His social tendencies show that he may suffer from a social disability. Despite this, Christopher goes on a journey, displaying courage and the benefits and the new beginnings that will happen. In addition, Christopher becomes much confident and a better and stronger person than he ever was. During his search he meets new people who become his friend resulting in unexpected answers to be brought to light. One of these are the reveal that Christopher’s mother was alive for the last two years. With this knowledge, Christopher goes to London and rekindle the relationships with his parents, resulting in a better life. All things considered, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” is not just a simple murder mystery novel, but a book about the fears of everyday people, which when confronted with courage, can end with success.

Chris Mccandless’ character portrays himself as an interesting character with his hidden passions and disinterest in social connections. Normally a person makes social connections to be apart of something. The human brain by instinct seeks human connection, and it by nature, it demands to be social . Chris went against his own genetic code to do what he wants and to prove to himself to his parents that his opinions matter just like their own. Chris’ love for the nature way of life makes him an unusual character in the face of others. Pink Floyd’s “another brick in the wall” challenges the way human believe their lives should be lead. Everyone condemns their children to social norms and stages. Reality can be nothing but “should..should..should..” however this itself rings true only if the character let themselves be held by the hand forever. These characters can be however they want to be whatever they want to be and Chris took notice of it a long time ago. His straining against the chains prove fruitful because he knows what and who he wants to be. Chris’ call to wild has always been in his heart and soul. He yearns for release and when he felt done with the normality of a humanly acceptable life style he took his books and left. The supernatural aid in Into the Wild grew the numerous human help Chris had during his journey. He made friends out of luck and natural charm. They want what they thought best for him but he did not need more people breathing down his throat. The author illustrates Chris’ road of trials during the whole journey, his hunt for food, his walking in the snow, his climbing and walking in the raging river and his trial is even present during his hitch hikes. Throughout Chris’ quest for his own purposes he encounters countless dangers and possible death, however, these events don’t bring him down nor does he allow them to deter

"It may sound strange, but champions are made champions by setbacks" (Bob Richards). This quote describes how struggling and setbacks can help a person become successful. This essay is about overcoming obstacles despite difficulty. An example of one of these obstacles is if someone injures their leg, it would be really hard for them to run. If they try really hard then their setback could just be a minor thing that made them want to succeed more. Another example is if they want to be a singer, but that might not be everyones strong suit. As a result they practice a lot and this practice leads to chances, chances open opportunities to become better. In the book "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time", Christopher is faced with a lot of obstacles (due to his autism), such as the color yellow, the train station, and loud noises. However, he almost always finds a way to overcome it. The book is written in the point of view of a boy with autism who faces a lot of obstacles but he never gives up and he always overcomes them despite how hard it may be.

A literary device that was commonly used in both books was allusion. As I was reading both books I would find myself reading references the author has made. In A room with a view they make many allusions relating to art, music, literature, etc. Chapter 6 starts with a reference to Greek mythology. The chapter starts by saying, " It was Phaethon who drove them to Fiesole that memorable day, a youth all irresponsibility and fire, recklessly urging his master 's horses up the stony hill. Mr. Beebe recognized him at once. Neither the Ages of Faith nor the Age of Doubt had touched him; he was Phaethon in Tuscany driving a cab." Phaeton was the sun of Helios. Helios hesitantly permitted Phateon drive the chariot of the sun. Since Phaeton didn 't have the skill needed to drive the chariot, he lost control and caught the plains of Africa to fire and turned into a desert so he was struck down by Zeus. E. M. In the novel of the Call of the Wild, Buck tried to adapt to his new and difficult life. He was forced to help the men find gold; he experienced a big transformation in him. At the end, he transformed into a new and different dog. Buck went through physical, mental and environmental changes. In my essay, I talked about how Buck was like at the beginning, what he changed into, and how he was forced to adapt his new environment, and underwent these changes.

Between Chris and his father, Walt, there was a lot of tension. Chris had always been livid towards his father for his actions that put a massive strain on the whole family. Ever since that tragic event occurred, Chris’s childhood was never the same. This event influenced his personality, similar to how his early exposure to the wild also impacted him. The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time can be seen as a Bildungsroman, which is also known as a coming of age novel. Christopher the main character undergoes many challenges, steps outside of his comfort zone, and adapts to the “adult” world. Christopher has a mental illness known as Aspergers which affects his ability to effectively socialize and communicate with others. In the novel he begins to learn about the real world and grows throughout finding out who killed a dog named Wellington.

When McCandless returned home his parents expressed their fears about his dangerous, daunting trips. Although he knew the dangerous situations he was putting himself through, he didn’t want to back down to his parents, “he wanted to prove to himself that he could make it on his own, without anybody else’s help” (178). He was tired of being babied by his parents, he wanted to show them that he was no longer a boy, but a man. McCandless’ refusal of his parent’s loving advice therefore proves that he wished to be his own person, stating the actions of his trip into the wild as being sane, and a product of independence.

Under the eyes of a young child, the modern society looks so innocent, fills with limelight, but as one grows up, he realized the world that he about to explore is not the same as he once thought.
