Mahatma Gandhi once said “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. This means that you act in a way that will make the world a better place, even if it is contradictory to popular belief. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is the father of Scout and Jem. He teaches his kids about everything that they ask about and tells them about the county’s racism and prejudice. He defends Tom Robinson in a trial that he knew was impossible to win because Tom was African-American. He did this despite knowing everyone would dislike him honestly defending Tom in the trial. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is courageous. When a rabid dog walked through the streets of Maycomb, Atticus shot it down, even though he did not want his kids to know that he could shoot. This was courageous because he had to show a part of his past that he did not like in order to save everyone from the rabid dog. He made a sacrifice so that the children and neighbors could be safe. When the mob wanted to lynch Tom for raping Mayella Ewell, Atticus stood in the way and defended him. If Scout had not come and spoken to Mr. Cunningham, he could have died. This was courageous because he had to risk his life for someone who was viewed as a less important life in their society. He defied the social order and risked death for Tom Robinson. Atticus answers all of the questions that the kids ask, no matter how complicated the answers might be to Scout and Jem. Atticus believes that his children deserve to know what is happening, just like any adult. Also, despite what society wanted and expected from him, Atticus tries his best to have an honest trial for Tom Robinson. An alternative lawyer in Maycomb would have ruled Tom guilty without any second thought. Atticus is fair and honest, even when it does not benefit himself. When Atticus thought that Jem had killed Bob Ewell, Atticus wanted to confess to the community that Jem had killed him. He would have sent his son to jail because he is honest and cannot lie to the public. According to Atticus, the courts are where everyone must tell the truth.
