Have you ever thought how you use trees? Do you use them for paper, or wood for houses, or anything else? In this paper i’m going to tell you how Early Loggers and Coastal Indians in the United States used trees back in the 1700-1800’s. Coastal Indians used trees for a variety of things, such as: housing, clothing, and transportation. Coastal Indians would carve out the middle of a large tree to make a canoe or boat, and then would go fish or hunt whales.

In Shel Silverstein’s book, The Giving Tree, Silverstein represents selfishness through the character of the boy, while in Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, Celia Bowen is the provider for Hector, at many points, literally bringing in money in to survive. In The Giving Tree, The boy is provided for in full by the tree and it’s giving quality, from when he was a little boy to an old man, representing the stereotypical relationship between a parent and their child. “And the boy loved the tree….” (13, Silverstein).
Despite some opposition to the novel, The Giving Tree should be a book on every teacher and parent’s reading list. However, it should be taught age appropriately. First, Colorado thought the book was sexist because it portrayed the boy as being selfish and wanting all of the tree’s belongings and the tree as a female giving in
Therefore, in Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree, the Tree is naive and being taken advantage of because she puts the Boy’s happiness and well-being ENTIRELY above her own, ultimately leading to her self destruction. The Boy also habitually returns to reap the benefits of the Tree because he is knows the Tree will not reject him, and that the Tree even feels sorry on his behalf because of his misfortune. Although some argue that the Tree and the Boy have a mother-son relationship, implying that she is willfully sacrificing for the Boy, it does not disprove that the Boy takes advantage of her, and that she lets him do it. Self care is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as “the practice of taking an active role in protecting one 's own well-being and happiness” and as “the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one 's own health.”

In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the tree by the Radley’s House, constructs a deep meaning of how Boo reaches out to the children. Having an inadequate reputation around the whole community, Boo believes that to be noticeable to others, he should stretch out towards Scout and Jem. Through-out the novel, Boo Radley offering gifts in the knothole, represents his desire to be kind to the children. Offering gum, the Indian Head Pennies, and soap carvings, it symbolizes the strength of Boo’s growing fondness and bond with the kids.
“Mom and Dad smiled at each other and laughed. It was a sound that Tree hadn’t heard from them in the longest time” (132). This shows how Tree wasn’t sure his parents were ever going to get along again, but they end up having a good time. This is an example of how family matters most and hope is always around. This situation gave Tree strength to preserve.

The reason of why The Education of Little Tree is assigned to read for this class is that we should know each family and culture are unique and important for children’s development. As a teacher, we should know that each child comes from different family and background, and it might be very different from ours, however, we should not judge and treat children unfairly due to the cultural differences. This book reminds us that there are families and cultures whose beliefs are different from other majority of people in this country, but these cultures need to be respected by us and be treated same as other majority beliefs. In this story, the unique and minor culture would be the Indian’s and the majority one would be the white settlers’ belief,

Shel Silverstein’s book The Giving Tree, in the past couple of years, has gained a negative popularity among parents. Some saying it is teaching kids to be selfish and ungrateful for what their parents give them. Silverstein, who is known for his books of poems like Where the Sidewalk Ends, and A Light in the Attic, most of the poems being light hearted, is being criticized for his “darker” story about the relationship between a boy and a tree. The Giving Tree is not a story of a selfish child; it is a story of a parental figure giving everything for a child that she loves, so he would be happy.

This poem can interpreted in many different ways, such as the literal interpretation of a christmas tree or the poem could be symbolic to represent something else.

Recent studies prove that the majority of people experience intrusive inner-thinking and monologues that guide their lives. Inner thinking is a highly individual process; people frequently consider an imaginative approach to their judgments in solitude through inner thinking. These ideas naturally direct people in a certain direction based on the significance of particular thoughts. K.E. Ganshert's novel, The Gifting, shows Tess' inner thinking of Luka in multiple different scenes of the book. From her thoughts on her impressions of Luka at school, through her thinking, after she was barred from speaking to Luka, and Tess's thoughts following Dr. Roth and Luka's rescue of her from the facility.
