In Gary D. Schmidt’s “Okay for Now,” Doug Swieteck’s abusive father moves the entire family to stupid Marysville, leaving behind any friends, any happiness, and any hope that Doug may have. You know how that feels? In the summer of 1968 Doug arrives to the dump of a house in Marysville where he family already has a begun to have a reputation that can only get him in trouble. Terrific. Doug Swieteck is a fourteen year old, who enjoys mouthing off to teachers and pretending he’s a lot of stuff he’s not, but how can you blame a kid who’s father comes home every night with the smell of alcohol on his breathe and rage in his heart?

Shut the Door and the Chinese Exclusion Act were created to limit immigration into the United States from outside countries, while A Modest Proposal outlined a solution to overpopulation and poverty within its own citizens. All three of these articles contained what would be controversy in today’s society, although they may have been seen as viable solutions during the time period they were proposed in. Shut the Door was a speech given by a senator in 1924 on the congress floor which proposed to, simply, “shut the door” to outside immigrants and “Americanize” the ones already within the borders. In any novel there is multiple parts that make up and define how the novel will go, such as if the character will be good. There is always a storyline to follow and from that storyline there are many different themes that give the novel character. In the novel Kindred by Octavian Butler there are multiple themes laced into the text that make the novel what it is. Indifference is the lack of interest, concern, or sympathy for a subject. It is one of the many problems man suffers from today. Both Niemoller and Wiesel’s works talk about indifference. They discuss apathy, about the lack of interest for your fellow man. Niemoller 's poem, “First they Came…” and Wiesel’s speech, “The Perils of Indifference” are quite similar in terms of the message.
