Abolition Movement Causes

Many southerners were angry that the people who were previously their slaves would now be as equally free as them. One man by the name of John Wilkes Booth was extremely angry with the outcome of the war. On April 9, 1865 General Robert E. Lee would surrender his troops which would be a devastating blow to the confederate army. On April 11, 1865, Abraham Lincoln would give a speech outside the White House about the country needed to reunify, Booth who was at the speech then said, “Now, by God I will put him through. That is the last speech he will ever make”.

1. There are many causes of the most devastating war in American History. We know this war as the Civil War. The first cause of the war was the election of Abraham Lincoln. Although an election of a new president may not seem as such a big deal, it was.

The Civil War was a very brutal war that left hundreds of thousands dead. The Missouri Compromise started this war by placing a boundary that did not allow future slaves North of Missouri’s southern border. In 1859, John Brown, an abolitionist, tried to start a slave uprising which created tension between the South and the North. Also in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States, which frustrated others because he was an abolitionist. An abolitionist is a person who doesn’t believe in slavery.

Economic differences between the North and the South,interpretations of the Constitution, the thought of slavery was morally wrong what caused the Civil War . The Civil War was caused by a combination of the problems of slavery, state’s rights, economic sectional differences, and political blunders and extremism. These factors combined in the 1850s to create a tense environment in which nearly every action could potentially lead to war. While the Civil War was inevitable, it was definitely partially caused by the extremism and poor political leadership of the preceding decade. However, these factors emerged out of cultural, economic, and political differences that were nearly a century in the making. There can be no doubt that extremism over issues of slavery factored into the causes of the Civil War.

After the efforts to gain independence from Britain and the creation of the United States of America, eighty years later this union was not so united. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, it was the first time that Americans fought Americans. Among many reasons, the Civil War is known to be a result of the arguments over the delineation of the States’ Rights or the presidential election of Abraham Lincoln. In actuality, the Civil War, the most deadly war in American history, was due to disputes over slavery in the American territories. Therefore, the Civil War was inevitable because of the consequences that occurred one being slavery.

There were also issues that could have caused the civil war during the Revolutionary era in 1787. Abraham Lincoln becoming president sparked the war in the early years because he was a Republican president who southerners believed posed a threat to slavery, and by the resulting secession of the South.

This including the electing of Abraham Lincoln made the southern states feel like they were going to lose control of the political choices in the southern territories, which would have lead to them not having control over their area in general (American Civil War History). There were three main causes of the civil war including slavery, sectionalism and secession. Slavery was a huge part of it and it led to the Missouri Compromise where any states below the border would be slave states and the anything north of that was free states. In the North, many people wanted Lincoln to let the South become a separate nation, but he wanted unity between the North and South. But when the war started in 1861 no one, not even Lincoln, could have foreseen the four years of the horrendous bloodshed that was to come. The corpses of American boys would be shoveled into the earth - hundreds and thousands of them.

The Civil War is one of the most important and significant event in the American history. This would then boost the slaves in the South to runaway and join the Union and their cause, which was not hard considering the cause was to free them and bring the Union back together. Within those four years was the bloodiest war in history. More men had died in the Civil War than any other war put together. The Union had 1,566,678 casualties and the Confederacy had 1,082,119 (Doc B). If the Civil War had not occurred, neither would have the Reconstruction era.

The Mexican-American War did not directly lead to the Civil War as much as abolitionism and the issue of slavery did. One could argue that with the Compromise of 1850, following the Mexican-American War, creating the Fugitive Slave Act and creating tension between the north and south because the north did not follow the Fugitive Slave Act, which angered the south. But the major cause of the Civil War was slavery and abolitionism, which was obvious because Abraham Lincoln, the president during this era, abolished slavery during the war while the north was winning and believed that they would win the war. This was called the Emancipation Proclamation. The Civil War is also called the “War to Make Men Free.”
