John Giglio was charged with passing forged money orders and sentenced to five years imprisonment. During the appeal, Giglio counsel discovered new evidence representing that the prosecutors had failed to reveal a promise made to its “key witness” that he wouldn’t be prosecuted if he testified for the government. The Court granted a certiorari to determine whether the evidence not revealed would require a retrial under the due process standards Napue v. Illinoi, 360 U.S. 264 (1959), and Brady v. Maryland, 373 U.S. 83 (1963). Evidence showed at trial, representatives at Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. learned that Robert Taliento, key witness and co-conspirator, was a banker teller and also had cashed several forged money orders. He confessed to providing Giglio with a customer’s bank signature card used by John Giglio to forge $2,300 in money orders. Robert Taliento handled and cashed the money orders on his machine. This was the story Taliento gave to the grand jury and John Giglio was prosecuted; Taliento was named a co-conspirator but not indicted on charges. Giglio requested for a new trial was denied by lower courts but The Supreme Court reversed it. The Supreme Court granted certiorari to resolve whether the evidence that wasn’t revealed obligated a new trial under the due process standards that has been created in the Brady v. Maryland and Napue v. Illinois.

I have chosen to look deeper into the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act because it is something that I don’t know much about. I have always wondered how things work when this law was taken into effect and so I will be exploring the law its self and then looking at cases where it was used. Arnie is assigned to a fix Mr. Bowen’s computer. However, Mr. Bowen stresses the importance of the company upholding their confidentiality policy when handling his data. Fred assures Mr. Bowen that his information will be handled completely professionally. However, while recovering data on Mr. Bowen’s computer, Arnie comes across pictures and a confession to murder. “Black Code: Surveillance, Privacy, and the Dark Side of the Internet,” written by Ronald J. Deibert, outlines different issues and benefits that have arised due to the growing use of the internet. Deibert begins his essay providing information about the internet such as the rapid growth of smartphones, how the internet has taken over most of societies lives, and key differences between previous technological innovations compared to the internet. He continues his essay by discussing the U.S.A. Patriot Act and how this law should be retracted based on the fact that various companies, like Google, can give the government our personal searches if they ask. Then, he talks about various types of cyber crimes and how we need stronger regulations to control the internet so these crimes would not be possible. Deibert concludes his essay explaining how the internet has provided many benefits in today’s nation, but the internet needs stricter regulations for our own protection. Although Deibert provides strong points on how the internet has positively and negatively impacted our nation, he only looks at the internet as a whole rather than looking at specific subunits of the internet.

The rapid proliferation of information technology has led to a significant rise in the number of people who use the internet in one way or another. With the growth in the number of persons who have an internet connection; certain individuals have begun to exploit this resource through the unethical practice of Identity theft. As more and more individuals are posting their personal information online, cybercriminals are stealing this information with the aim of assuming the victim's identity so as to either obtain financial advantage or benefits that are associated with the victim (Jewkes, 2013).

Addiction is the reliance on a routine. There are many addictive stages. Addiction, as it comes along, becomes a way of life. The persistent use of the substance causes to the user serious physical or psychological problems and dysfunctions in major areas of his or her life. The drug user continues to use substances and the compulsive behavior despite the harmful consequences, and tries to systematically avoid responsibility and reality, while he or she tends to isolate himself/herself from others because of guilt and pain (Angres, & Bettinardi-Angres, 2008). All these characteristics led to the conclusion that drug addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use. It is considered as a brain disease because drugs change the structure of the brain, and how it works. Every drug affects different systems of the brain. For example, in the case of cocaine, as the brain is adapted in the presence of the specific drug, brain regions responsible for judgment, decision-making, learning, and memory begin to physically change, making certain behaviors “hard-wired.” In some brain regions, connections between neurons are pruned back. In others, neurons form more connections. (Martin, 2000) These brain changes can be long-lasting and can lead to the harmful behaviors seen in people who abuse drugs.
