For about two years he struggled to stay alive under the intolerable conditions of the concentration camp. In the novel “Night” by Elie Wiesel, the character Ellie was effected by selfishness, loss of humanity, and the shift in their belief in God.
Life in concentration camps brought the struggle between life and death, so Wiesel writes Night to share about his experience in a life or death situation he encountered with his father during one of the selections they went through. Wiesel starts out by saying,“The roll call was shorter than usual. The evening soup was distributed at great speed, swallowed as quickly. We were anxious.” As time went on, the conditions in the concentration camps began to grow more dreadful.

The Holocaust was a period when European Jews were treated horribly by followers of Adolf Hitler. During the 1930s-40s loyalty was something everyone had to try their best to hold on to whether it was for family, getting used against them, and in this case, possibly backfiring on Wiesel himself.
Wiesel became resentful toward his God when he witnessed the inhumane acts against innocent people. When Wiesel is in Buna, He witnesses the hanging of two men and a pipel for the possession of arms. The hanging went along as planned except for the fact that the executioner had not modified the hanging for a small thirteen year old child. It did not end his life with a quick snap of the neck but instead with a slow suffocation which they were forced to watch for over half an hour. Before the hanging Wiesel had heard a man ask where is God and how was this being allowed to happen.

They lost their names and became a number, they were starved, over-worked, lived in terrible conditions, operated on, beaten, and driven to insanity.
